But it does tell a story... and quite a nasty one too. Even the most untutored musical ear, who doesn't know the details, can identify the writhing-snake motif (on the bass), the overly-innocent-child motif, and the final roll-call of different voices (represented by different instruments) "for whom the bell tolls".
