Well, this topic is a couple of years old but I thought I'd add my penny worth.

The high pitched whining noise sounds very much to me like the whistling noise made by old TVs and computer monitors that is usually about 15kHz or so. If there were a couple of TV monitors in the studio when things were being recorded it would easily be picked up by the mics and put to tape. The cumulative effect of lots of tracks with that quiet background monitor whistle would be quite audible. I guess that Mike's studio at the time was open-plan and the control room was not isolated from the live recording room.

Also, the voices are definitely real at the beginning. It sounds like Sally Oldfield to me. A well trained singer with good diaphragm control can easily sustain a single long note for that long.

Has anyone else noticed an extremely high pitched whine that runs all the way through the Incantations CD?

That is put there especially to put off any one under 24 from listening to it.  A bit like the high pitched sirens used to prevent teenager congregating in attractive locations like Milton Keynes shopping centre.

Not sure how old you are Korgy!!!! but if you are under 25.........

Funny. I bought that double LP in 1978 when I was 16, played it hundreds of times, bout the CD around 1999, played it many times, and never heard the whining to which this thread is devoted. Hmm, I guess I better listen to it.......

The whining is there and it drives me flippin' nuts.  It was on the original UK LP, the first UK CD release and now, thanks to HDCD, it's even more intrusive than before.  It runs through the whole album, not just the intro of Part 1-which, by the way, is not a synth.  It's Maddy Prior's voice on a tape loop.  For you naysayers who don't think anyone can hold a constant pitch long enough to get a proper loop-just immerse yourself in her work with Steeleye Span.  I swear the woman's probably never sung a bum note in her life!

In response to discussion on this in another topic (please try and keep discussions to the topic they're relevant to, otherwise we'll all end up very confused! ), you can see the whine as a spike at just under 10kHz (I reckon it's around 9.6) if you run it through a spectrum analyser.

I've created a file where I've given that frequency range a hefty boost to make it clearer. It's not the line whistle from a TV - that's 15.625kHz for a 625 line PAL TV. If I think about this long and hard enough, I might be able to work out what it is...

What's the result of filtering out the offending frequency spike? Is it too damaging to the actual music?

Good question...see what you think:

Filtered version

I doubt most people would be bothered by the difference (apart from the lack of whine, which they may be thankful for! ). If I was remastering the album, I think I'd selectively apply it, rather than just treating every section the same. I actually used a specialist noise reduction tool for this, rather than a straight EQ.
Taking out that whine makes the rest of the high frequency noise more obvious...that could be worked on too, of course!

It occurred to me that this may be something which was introduced at the mastering stage, and that some releases might not have it, so here's a totally untouched version for reference:

Unfiltered version.

Those are both from one of the older CD editions, CDVDT 101.

Scatterplot you didn't get back to us about which version you've been listening to.  I'm eager to know if it's the Caroline edition you have.  It's entirely possible that it doesn't have the defect.  If you do own that one, guard it with your life (and put it up on a torrent  ;) )!

Korgscrew, can you confirm whether or not the Caroline edition is "whineless".  I've been scouring all the torrent sites and Soulseek constantly but with no success.   Argh!

It was a MP3 I made of the Caroline CD which I cant find!! All my Cd's were in 2 boxes, but no Incantations. Damn. I'm glad I backed it up a few years ago. I also want to take the 2LP set and digitalize it like the HR Porky cut. I bought that software just for HR. I'll post a link when I'm done recording/washing it. I cranked up part 3 so loud my ears hurt for a while. It was great. But still no whining.

Finally found my Caroline CD of Incantations, along with my cherished lost copy of Spinal Tap "Break Like the Wind". I still can't hear any whine...........
