I'm wondering if I'm the only one to see a connection between the songs? The way I look at it, the five songs on the album are connected as a story :-) A story that's focusing on a person... in short:

- Make Make
This song describes the bad situation in the characters life. He feels very lonely and abandoned ("You got no place when you're down and out", "who cares what you feel", etc)

- No Dream
In his desperation he commits a crime. Maybe a burglary ("glass all on the floor"), or even murder ("hands have turned to white"). He is afraid of the situation he got into and he just want it to be a bad dream.

- Mr Shame
He knows what he did was wrong. He feels terrible after the crime and is ashamed of himself.

- Gimme back
He is caught and taken to be executed and shares his last thoughts about it. Now he realize the beauty in life and he doesn't want it all to be taken away from him . He wants to be forgiven. In the end of the track you hear his heartbeat slow down and he dies...

- Heaven's Open
His life on earth has ended and he can now fly to heaven or paradise, where he is forgiven!

OK, this is my theory and the images that appear in my head when I listen to it... Anyone else look at it this way? :-)

Best wishes

/ Johan

I'm afraid I look at them in the boring and unimaginitive way, seeing them as being mostly connected to feelings surrounding Mike's relationship with Virgin Records...If you look at them from that point of view, the references start to jump out.

Your story's far more inventive, though...you could turn it into a musical...

I've never thought of it that way. I've agreed with Korgscrew, because that's the obvious thing, and it connects with the events in his life and record contract at that period. Make Make is definately an attack on commercialism, directly mentioning Virgin Records.
No Dream is a hard one for me, and your theory as to the meaning is the better than any I can come up with. It feels to me like a reflection on the hopelessness of corporate culture and the hurt it can cause.
Mr. Shame may be about someone who regrets the above corporate culture. The song does mention a 'money bug'.
Gimme Back is probably about Mike's relationship with Virgin, as he felt he was being held back, hence Gimme Back.
Heaven's Open is a song os pure joy, and is my favourite song of his ever. It is probably about his joy at leaving Virgin. Not very nice I know, but when you look at it this way none of the songs are nice.

Do all fan narratives end in death? This is the second I've read- I think tubularbill's TBIII narrative had some blood and gore in it towards the end- that has this feature. Is this a trait of Oldfield fans? Or a nice way of ending the story? Or just a consequence of the way Mike writes his songs...?

It's probably just that Mike writes so many good endings that everyone thinks they're in heaven!  :)
