How about giving the titles of MO pieces to the different ratings? Like 'Far above the clouds' for the highest one - and maybe 'Only time will tell...' for the lowest? wink

Following on from what Archangel Foster said, here are some "possible" rankings. I say possible because I'm not thinking straight, I'm writing in a rush and I can't be bothered checking them:

Far Above the Clouds (AF)
Only Time Will Tell...(AF)
First Excursion
Out of Sight
In High Places
Mistake
Top of the Morning
Jewel in the Crown
Into Wonderland
Five Miles Out (hmmm, maybe not)
From the Ashes
A New Beginning
Ascension
Good News
Bad News
The Time Has Come
Flying Start
Summit Day

There are plenty more for you to add or discard, but for the moment, I'm going out so I can't finish the list.

I'd like to add 'Crises' - isn't that obvious? wink Apart from that, I think Tim's suggestions should get us started. I like 'Mistake' very much!

Personally I'm a bit iffy about using Crises and Five Miles Out as rankings, as they are also album names, and you might end up having something like Five Miles Out is ranked as Crises, vice versa or similar. So we might have to ignore those two. Unless we edit it a little (ie there's a crises rather than just Crises).

But, if we do use album names, we could give them Platinum status. Or we could give them a rating of In Dulci Jubilo (ie, Good Christian Men [or Mike fans] Rejoice)

So, after thinking about this a little, a provisional rating system (out of say 10):

Best rating to worst rating:

OUT OF SIGHT/JEWEL IN THE CROWN
FAR ABOVE THE CLOUDS/JEWEL IN THE CROWN
IN HIGH PLACES/TOP OF THE MORNING/IN DULCI JUBILO
ASCENSION/IN HIGH PLACES/INTO WONDERLAND
GOOD NEWS
FLYING START
ONLY TIME WILL TELL...
FROM THE ASHES/EMBERS
BAD NEWS
MISTAKE

And perhaps a completely unnecessary option of giving a provisional rating after listening to the album once (ie, First Excursion).

This would be fine for the legend, but we need 10 icons now...

They could be rated with instruments - from say, contents of an aeromodeller's toolbox all the way up to tubular bells at the top. Then there is the possibility of using the names of Mike's various women...

Or a sax as the lowest icon, then the aeromodeller's toolbox and so on.

Hmm, I'll make some more lists now:

ICONS

Best to worst:

Tubular Bells
<insert a few guitars here, you can do that, I don't know about the tech stuff here>
Keyboards/Grand Piano
Glockenspiel
Synthesizer (sorry Korgscrew, I don't think we could have synthesators here. Or could we?!)
Piltdown Man
Aeromodeller's Kit
Saxophone

Or the more convential method:

Tubular Bells
Acoustic Guitar
Spanish Guitar
Mandolin
2 Slightly Distorted Guitars
Bass Guitar
Glockenspiel
Reed and Pipe Organ
Grand Piano
Saxophone/Aeromodeller/whatever

or the TBII version

Tubular Bells
Digital Sound Processor
The Venetian Effect (ie, gondola piccy)
2 Slightly Sampled Electric Guitars
Bass Guitar
Glockenspiel
Reed and Pipe Organ
Grand Piano
Saxophone/Aeromodeller/Piltdown Man/whatever
Saxophone/Aeromodeller/whatever

This reminds me a lot of my attempts at taking over the bell system at school...

Aaaargh! The aeromodeller kit describes something worthless?! Maybe it's not a good instrument, but I don't accept (neither Mike as a qualified pilot I think) that 'something that has to do with airplanes' means 'sh*t'.

Don't worry Man In Rain, the aeromodeller does not represent something worthless. It is just an experimental instrument. What we could do then is change the icons a little to include instruments and hobbies, ie planes, horse-riding etc etc.

I forgot the double speed guitar and the vocal chords!!!!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Too much Amarok, not enough Tubular Bells or Tubular Bells II. My life is not worth living (well actually it is, but still).

Tim...the MC in TB2 actually says "Vocal cords", not "chords"... I have the songbook... wink Vocal cords are a human instrument, and the MC introduces instruments...not the sounds produced by the instruments.... smile

PS: Please don't take this seriously. I'm jokin'.

Digital sound processor isn't an instrument... (that's not the digital sound processor making that noise - it's a synthesator being processed by one...) wink

Perhaps digital sound processor should be the one of lowest value because of that...and while we're on the subject...how exactly do you slightly sample a guitar? This could be a new one for tubular tech...

I'm tired, I've just got up, I want to go to sleep and I'm always the one who ends up making the lists in this topic. So I don't really want to go into depth with this. I just made a list of the announced instruments as I heard them. OK? So if you really need new ideas, I look forward to reading your lists soon. wink

It's about time we decided on something, isn't it? I mean we've collected loads of ideas now, are they all that bad? If there isn't some genius out there who'll provide us with THE perfect rating system, I suggest we agree on Tim's suggestions.

Ugo: (I wasn't originally going to respond, but what the hey...)

About the vocal chords/cords issue:

There are a few reasons why I wrote the former. You can decide which one is most believable to you:

1. I was writing in a rush so that no one pointed out that I'd missed out the two instruments that I forgot.
2. Spelling error
3. I knew what the MC was referring to but I wasn't completely sure how to spell it
4. Natural stupidity wink
5. Sailor's Pornhipe.
