I'm not listening to this right now but recently, I've felt the pressure of my own nationality and am diving into the music of Os Mutantes. WOW, great stuff. These guys are able to transcend the limits of traditional "psychedelic" music and blow off the roof with a crazed mix of genres that sound very obvious in theory, but completely overwhelms when put into practice. And there's the debauchery, of course: they're some of the very few musicians that are actively funny, at least to me. In their third LP, "A Divina Comédia" (The Divine Comedy), they have a track that stars off like a generic Janis Joplin immitation, but then turns into complete parody when one of the singers starts howling "My refrigerator doesn't work... I tried everything, I tried everything". I'm definitely quite excited by these albums.

I agree 100% Ratty.
Unfortunately my husband isn't a fan of Queen, (perhaps I should change him for one who is).

NP Jimmy Page and Robert Plant "Walking Into Clarksdale"
I haven't played this in a while, Great Stuff!!!
Earlier on my playlist were

Queen- A Night At The Opera
Rolling Stones- Beggars Banquet
The Best Of Kevin Ayres (need to get more) I got into Kevin as a result of a topic on Tubular.net.
Hergest Ridge (Boxed version), I don't think I need to say who it's by here.
;) Also tracks "3 Lights" by RPWL and "The Wonderous World Of Punt" by Therion, I need some more by these bands. Again I wouldn't have heard of these bands were it not for this thread :) .

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms on good old fashioned LP :) .

Earlier music played Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality

Monster Magnet- B Sides.

Next on the playlist is Marillion "Script For A Jester's Tear.

Monster Magnet are one of the most successful and influential underground "Stoner Rock" scene. Formed by New Jersey native, and self taught guitarist( already a veteran musician with little known late 70's punk band "Shrapnel) Dave Wyndorf in 1989. MM released their first album "Spine Of God" in 1992. MM combine 70's rock/metal with a hefty dose of psychedelia/ space rock. It was in 1998 MM really made it with the "Powertrip" album. Since then MM have supported bands such as Aerosmith , Metallica and Megadeth on tour.
If you haven't heard MM's album released last year "Monolithic Baby" it's great stuff
:) . That's a brief history of Monster Magnet for more info check out the MM website www.monstermagnet.net. I'm not sure how to get these links to work, so I don't know if this one does, anyone know what I'm doing wrong? please.

Coldplay - X&Y

Not sure this really requires any further analysis that can't be read elsewhere. What I will say is that there aren't many surprises and in some respects, that is very conforting especially as in my opinion, this is their most consistent, melodic, anthemic and epic album to date. Awesome! :D

In the past 24 hours I have been listening to....

Neil Young "Silver & Gold" - criminally neglected return to acoustic love songs from 2000. Songs like Red Sun, Horseshoe Man and The Great Divide are almost guaranteed to bring me to tears (especially this week). Without Rings is as moody and enigmatic as anything he's ever done.

Neil Diamond "Play Me" (a compilation of all of his Uni/MCA releases) - I listened to Walk On Water and Morningside, complete with the two beautiful instrumental pieces, scored by Tom Catalano, that link them.

Sinead O'Connor - a homemade compilation. I listened to This Is To Mother You from her "Gospel Oak" EP which is very beautiful and comforting but terribly, terribly melancholic. You'd have to have the hardest heart for this not to melt you. Also listened to Báidín Fheilimí and I'll Tell me Ma from her superb album of Irish traditional songs done in a modern style called "Sean-Nos Nua".

Then I listened to a tape of Waterboys live recordings on the way to work. One song, Long Way Too The Light, will feature on their forthcoming live album and is a really uplifting spiritual song of wonder and joy.

Jules

White Queen from Queen II, on good old fashioned LP :D . I have the house, well bungalow actually, to myself for a change.

What can I say about Queen, great band, Freddie Mercury lives on 14 years after his death, the ultimate showman. Queen's music I reckon will be played centuries from today

Played TSODE in the car earlier today. :) .

The bass underneath the acoustic guitar sounds a little bit like the very start of "Pictures in the Dark", but I really can't find any other Oldfield link - sorry. :)

Apart from this, today has been totally Karl Jenkins/Adiemus for me: Songs of Sanctuary, Dances of Time and The Eternal Knot, each of them played all the way through [I don't really dislike Adiemus II a.k.a. Cantata Mundi, but the movements in that CD are a little bit too long... :)], in addition to the two unreleased songs, "Cantilena" and "Elegia", on their "best of" The Journey CD. The greatest enjoyment that Jenkins' music gives me is maybe the fact that I don't have to pay attention to the lyrics being sung, as they have no meaning at all. :D
