Mark Hollis must come out of retirement and do one final gig cos my life has a gaping hole in it!

@ kazav: Mark Hollis is probably too lost into drugs and/or his oiwn private matters to perform ever again. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. :)

I've just finished watching The Essential M.O. on DVD... the Knewborth performance. All of it excellent IMHO. I particularily like the fact that TB part I is much more "prog" than the original and TB part II is much rockier than the original... after all, it's Knebworth, it was Mike O.'s chance to rock out and he did. :D I'm also very fond of what I like to call the "concert edit" of Ommadawn, where Mike O. and the band omit quite a few bits, but they give to the parts that they do play all the importance and the techical/musical prowess they undoubtly deserve. Also, the drum duets (trios?) in the finale are fantastic.

@ Kazav - yes, Hollis produced some beautiful music.

Now listening (repeatedly) to this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66molzUEkWI

Brilliant madness. Lyrics as usual from the "Blakes 7" school of sci-fi. How the heck they persuaded the Olympics people to make it the anthem is beyond me.

@Ugo,

Hollis never was into hard drugs (soft ones, who knows? Well, who hasn't been partial to a bit of the weed at some point... ;)) . He took the magazine who made the claim he was into heroin to court and won. Article here without the paragraphs that made that claim:

http://users.cybercity.dk/~bcc11425/IntVOX0298.html

His brother was into hard drugs, however, and it was of his brother's experiences with heroin that he wrote the song "I Believe in You". As for his private matters, they are just that. What I do know is that he is working with EMI at the moment on a collection of past works which will consist of his own personal choices. Amazing after how they tried to stuff him. Still, I suppose they still own them all.

@ kazav: what I know about Mark Hollis is only what I've read about him. If most of the stuff that's been written about him in these latest years is pure crap, well, I don't think it's really my fault. All I can do is a mea culpa for being misinformed. :) And anyway I never said "heavy drugs". Here in Italy, "drugs" may refer both to stuff like heroin, cocaine, etc. and to things you buy at a chemist's. Aspirin is a drug. :)

I was talking about this fella in another thread. I never heard of him prior to 1997 when I bought Genesis "Calling All Stations". I can see why Mike R. and Tony B. chose him. I've followed his career since and am still very impressed with his abilities/output/vocals:

Travis   Side

I really like this song, and the lyrics are good too...

Well I believe there's someone watching over you
They're watching every single thing you say
And when you die
They'll set you down and take you through
You'll realise one day
That the grass is always greener on the other side
The neighbour's got a new car that you wanna drive
And when time is running out you wanna stay alive
We all live under the same sky
We all will live, we all will die
There is no wrong, there is no right
The circle only has one side
We all try hard to live our lives in harmony
For fear of falling swiftly overboard
But life is both a major and minor key
Just open up the chord
But the grass is always greener on the other side
The neighbour's got a new car that you wanna drive
And when time is running out you wanna stay alive
We all live under the same sky
We all will live, we all will die
There is no wrong, there is no right
The circle only has one side

Track written by Fran Healy

The part I really like is.... "But life is both a major and minor key
Just open up the chord"

and how very true

Underworld - 'And I Will Kiss' from the 'Isles of Wonder' CD  :)

I'm actually playing this more than Mike at the moment...

Oh absolutely!
I love the way all the different layers just build and build one on top of each other until you get this incredible wall of sound. It's mesmerising IMO, and very, very evocative.

@ Jim: I never thought any good about Ray Wilson and Genesis. With Stiltskin he was fantastic, on his own he's very good as well. But the only song (to me) where his vocal style matched Mike Rutherford's and Tony Banks' playing is "Shipwrecked". The rest is pure crap, IMHO.

@ bee: the whole album on which that Travis song is (The Invisible Band) is incredibly good, check it out. The following one, The Boy With No Name, is still very good but inferior. After that, they simply lost their way.

@ 3Wheeler: Within Temptation are indeed excellent. I'm glad that they finally got away from being not much more than a clone of Evanescence and Nightwish and found their own style.

Now playing... Metallica, "Master of Puppets", live version from S&M.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxtmkdNyBlo
On the S&M show, this is preceded by Ennio Morricone's "The Ectasy of Gold" and I have to say that the Michael Kamen-orchestrated version of "Master of Puppets" sounds quite Morricone-esque as well, especially when it slows down. Most Metallica fans I know hate S&M with a passion. I'm not a big Metallica fan (although I have almost all of their albums), but I like everything from ...And Justice for All onwards quite a lot. :)
