Recently, I met someone living near me who also likes the work of MO, JMJ, etc. He has given me a number of tapes, the most notable being one labelled merely "Vangelis : Vol. 1 + 2" - the others that I have are properly titled and traceable (e.g. "JMJ : Zoolook"), but this one seems to have stumped me.

The "Vol. 1" tracks include:

Pulstar
Theme from "The Cosmos" (Heaven and Hell) - I think?
Albedo 0.39
To The Unknown Man

The "Vol. 2" tracks include:

"So Long Ago, So Clear" w/ Jon Anderson
A number of things that I can't identify - one of which opens a bit like this (the key may be wrong, but the intervals are right - where -> is a port./slide): C -> F -> C (pause) Bb -> G -> D

It would be greatly appreciated if someone could correctly title the album because at the moment it completely f**ks up my casette filing system.

Those tapes are probably To The Unknown Man volumes 1 and 2.

The piece that begins with the slides is called Bacchanale. It is originally from the album Heaven and Hell.

I might be able to get you a complete tracklist of both volumes if you need it.

-Posting is empty-
-Because the author felt totally uplifted, when he read something about is alltime-favourite Vangelis and essentially missed the topic.-
-Sorry-

BTW... I'm regrettably not able to help you because I don't know a compilation called "To the Unknown Man". Furthermore, I was not able to find information about such a compilation.
I surely would know these tracks... frown

Do you know anything from Jon and Vangelis (Jon Anderson---singer of 'Shine' and 'In High Places')

They have a few records together, and have great tunes as 'I'll Find My Way Home', 'He Is Coming', 'Horizon' and 'Italian Song'.

I recommend it for you all.

I believe that one of Delfín's tracks was supposed to be "He Is Sailing", which provides for less innuendo and generally much cleaner vinyls tongue

One of the more famous tracks (and my personal favourite) is "I Hear You Now"

OK, all that aside, I would just like the name and tracklisting of the compilation (which I afaik is NOT a bootleg or personal compilation)

I've found the playlist of To The Unknown Man Volumes I and II:

Volume I:

Side A-
PULSTAR
ARIES
A WAY
ALBEDO 0.39

Side B-
TO THE UNKNOWN MAN
MAIN SEQUENCE
THE SWORD OF ORION

Volume II:

Side A-
BACCHANALE
INTESTINAL BAT
ALPHA
SO LONG AGO, SO CLEAR

Side B-
SPIRAL
BEAUBORG EXCERPT
DERVISH D

I doesn't seem to match up with the partial tracklist you posted, but all of the tracks seem to be on there. I think that "To The Unknown Man" was originally released as a single LP but was extended into a 2 volume compilation later. Therefore what you have is probably the single LP version (I can't be sure of this as I can't get the playlist for the single LP)

In which case, I've not been sure whether there have been 1, 2 or 3 tracks there. Being as it's on K7 as well, and 2 sides LP = 1 side C90, from my PoV it matches as well as I need it to. I can find more info now that I have a definite title.

thx to rosko for the full listing, and Dervish D for reminding me of, er ... Dervish D

Actually, it fits in quite well. I thought that some of my guesses might have been wrong (that tends to happen to guesses), and, having listened much more closely to the tape (which is a C90, and would hold an entire 12in. on each side).

thx to rosko for the listing, and Dervish_D for that reminder

Mirwais 57, if you want to try out some more I'd recommend his album China.

Somewhat older, I think made in the late seventies. Available on CD so that won't be a problem.

A very exiting album.

There is no album by Vangelis named "Unknown Man", maybe a compilation ?

This piece is on the album "Spiral"(1977).

I think they could be. I remember seeing the tape in my local library. "To The Unknown Man: The Best of Vangelis"

No mention of Offworld Music anywhere

I've got an album that's just called 'The Best of Vangelis' and contains the tracks:

- Pulstar
- Spiral
- To The Unknown Man
- Albedo 0.39
- Bacchanale
- Aries
- Beaubourg excerpt
- So Long Ago, So Clear

Hope it helps.

Only Vangelis compilation I have is "Reprise 1990-1999" as it's the only one to feature at least some unique tracks.

However, if you're looking to follow up on the two Unknown Man volumes (from the looks of things, culled from his 1970's work on RCA) - try these:

1.  "Heaven and Hell" in its entirety is a must-hear.  Be mindful that CD copies of this album have remarkably poor EQ and some noticable glitches.  RCA should really consider remastering it.

2.  Can't go wrong with "Opera Sauvage" either.

3.  For something a bit more mainstream, "Direct" comes recommended.

4.  No Vangelis collection is complete without the soundtrack to "Blade Runner"

5.  Avoid "Beaubourg" and "Invisible Connections".  They're just Vangelis being weird and experimental - they can barely be called 'music'.

1.  "Heaven and Hell" in its entirety is a must-hear.  Be mindful that CD copies of this album have remarkably poor EQ and some noticable glitches.  RCA should really consider remastering it.

Plus, the CDs only feature the front cover, so this is really just 'Vangelis - Hell'  :p
Seriously, of all the Vangelis albums I've heard (Hypothesis, Heaven And Hell, Chariots Of Fire, China, The Best of Vangelis and some stuff from Jon & Vangelis) this is the one I like the most, probably because it's already 'real' Vangelis style but not purely synthetic.
I also like Aphrodite's Child '666' which is a really good prog rock album.

But why, I wonder (and sorry for OT), do people (sometimes including me) always draw a comparison between Jarre / Vangelis and Mike? I mean obviously they're very different from him (not going into the details of differences between Jarre and Vangelis here); what is it that so many people feel they have in common? Just because they all do instrumental music?
