I do really like Maggie's voice... but I've never liked any of the Crisis album, except a couple of parts from the title track. Foreign Affair is no exception. :music:

No, I don't agree, it's a great song. I wish it would be even longer, it's wonderful to listen to it at night - and this is true for the whole Crises album.

Anyway, it's really rare that you can't hear any kinds of guitars in an Oldfield track, I only know about these (except for TKF):

Foreign Affair
Bones
The Trap
Make Make
In the Beginning
The Sunken Forest
A New Beginning
The Spectral Army (only basses)
Sunlight Shining through Cloud
Broad Sunlit Uplands
Firefly

...and even including TKF Foreign Affair was the very first one.

Very interesting. Never thought about that.

In High Places and Foreign Affair are fantastic tracks. They have a cold, chilly quality that sends shivers down my spine. In the case of Foreign Affair I can't help but thinking how perfectly it would fit on Patrick Bateman's walkman - cold, repetetive, cocaine-like digital synth arpreggios and lyrics that could be a synopsis for a cheap 1983 direct-to-video drama. All delivered by Maggie in a voice that expresses as much sadness as indifference.
I have no about the intentions behind the song. But it's a cool shiny surface. As opposed to say...Magic Touch.

A breathtaking share, Lars. Even when i don't know what you mean with 'cocaine-like digital synth arpeggios'.

Not really keen on it - but don't need to skip it when it comes on either.

Definitely a skipper, for me. The repetition is extremely annoying, and the singer's voice is irritatingly smug. Apart from "Moonlight Shadow", I don't really like any of the short tracks on the album. In "In High Places" Jon Anderson sounds as though he's drowning in a topographic ocean; the sparseness of musical ideas in "Taurus 3" is a bit insulting to "Taurus 2", with which, because of its name, it can't help but be compared; and "Shadow on the Wall" is just another soft rock song (which has the added annoyance of reminding me of Bob Seger, whose stuff I detest). A crisis indeed - of inspiration!

Or "makes your brain rot".

Charlie's disgusting brain,
Well, it's all black!
That girl has a very black brain
And it won't come back...

I can't say I'm a big fan of that track really.
The rest of the Crisis album I enjoy a lot, but that song is a bit... I don't know. It just falls flat to me.

Welcome to the group Wendy. Your posting something in this thread gives me opportunity to say something about the "Crises" track itself. I think Ugo criticized the "watcher and the tower" section for being pointless and repetitive (these weren't the words he used, but that's the gist of it). In my opinion they form rather a teasing and fascinating mantra, in keeping with the strangeness of the haunting and fascinating cover picture. (I can't listen to "Crises" without thinking of the colour green.)

Hello Wendy; - I usually skip Foreign Affair too - it's too smug and posh for me.

Nightspore; - do you think of the colour green because the CD cover is very green?

Repetitive yes.
Boring NO.
I never skip it but I do prefer the live version.

And welcome to the nuthouse WB.  :)

The only problem with "Foreign Affair" is that the ending section is repeated too many times. Two are enough. :)

That's a good question, Wiga. The music has a kind of cold, sparse precision about it that reminds me of water - perhaps that's it.
