7.Pros and cons of hitch hiking – Roger Waters, for me better than any Floyd album
8.Bat out of hell – Meat Loaf, simply awesome

11.UFOrb – The Orb, the most soothing album I’ve ever encountered
12.Different class – Pulp, sadly they never managed to rekindle that quality
13.Led Zeppelin 2 – Could so easily have been 1 or 4
14.Imagine – John Lennon, Oh Yoko always cheers me up, don’t know why?
15.Alchemy – Dire Straits, Knopfler at his peek and a brilliant version of sultans of swing
16.Never mind the bollocks – Sex pistols, what can I say rock at its dirtiest
17.Lovelife – Lush, sadly no longer together but a great swansong
18.The Wall – Pink Floyd, a truly classic album
19.Six wives of Henry VIII – Rick Wakeman, some amazing keyboard playing
20.Abbey Road – Beatles, I still get shivers during Golden slumbers

Jesus you could go on forever on this topic.

I've fortunate enough to discover some pretty amazing music the last couple of months. I won't make a top20 list all over again (although there would be some major changes) but rather tell you about some fantastic albums:

Yes - Close to the Edge (I'm sure you know about this one, but I didn't until quite recently  :))

Gentle Giant - Octopus (This has probably become by favourite band. Medieval sounding progressive jazz-rock with blues and classical influences. :) Very complex stuff. Check their album Free Hand as well.)

The Flower Kings - Space Revolver (This is possibly the best record I have ever heard. It's up there with Dark Side of the Moon and Amarok, although not very similar to either in style. The Flower Kings are a swedish prog band, a bunch of splendid musicians, the guitarist in particular. I thought I knew of all truly great albums until i heard this one :))

2) The Beatles - Abbey Road
3) Pink Floyd - Wish you were here

6) Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge over troubled water
7) Eric Clapton - 24 nights
8) Pink Floyd - The dark side of the moon
9) Coldplay - A rush of blood to the head
10) Eric Clapton - Slowhand
11) Various - Woodstock soundtrack
12) Vangelis - Original Blade Runner soundtrack
13) Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene
14) Phil Collins - ... But seriously
15) The Alan Parsons Project - Ammonia Avenue
16) The Beatles - Yellow Submarine songtrack
17) James Newton-Howard - The Fugitive soundtrack
18) Metallica - Metallica (a.k.a. The black album)
19) Blackmore's Night - Fires at midnight
20) Acoustic Alchemy - The beautiful game

Kinda peculiar list, ain't it? :)

How nice to see that word of 'The Flower Kings' is gradually spreading :) I opted for their album 'Stardust We Are' in my top 20, but to be honest, it could have been any from their back catalogue - yes, they are that good. For those already in the know, a new double album comes out in November 2002  ;) can't wait!

I got the Flower Kings' new album the other day, and... well... this will take some time to digest. I'm extremely impressed by some tunes, the 30 min epic "The Truth Will Set You Free" in particular, and less inpressed by others... but this kind of music usually grows on me, and I wouldn't be surprised if I end up loving all of it. Everyone should hear this album.

Also, I forgot to add the Beatles to my list of recent discoveries, they're last few albums in particular. Abbey Road, Magical Mystery Tour and Let It Be are all marvelous...

About Alan Parsons Project:I love them.

Brazilian stuff on your list: that´s quite nice, although being myself from Brazil,I don´t like brazilian music that much...

It´s hard for me to choose my fav 20 non-Oldfield albums,so here comes some of my choices:

Alan Parsons - Try Anything Once
Rick Wakeman - Criminal Record
Blur - Parklife
Mansun - Attack of the Grey Lantern
Chumbawamba - Tubthumping
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

hi tati,

the two albums i mentioned are for me some of these which never feel time passing. always i listen to them even after a long time they are welcome.

toquinho is huge as guitarist...  a master... the same with brazilian rythms, as in the instrumental 'testamento', than with more classical performances as he shows in 'valsa da tunisia' another instrumental work which reminds me some classical played with a single clear guitar.

besides i like the sound of your language, it's very sweet and maria creuza's voice is amazing...
there's no accounting for tastes... :)

Well, I have so many things to say:

First of all, I think that if you get 2 or more choices of the same group or artist in yout top 20 list, it demonstrates a lack of  general music culture.

A well balanced top 20 should contain more than one music style, showing that you have an open mind!

I look at your choices and I was amazed: let's be serious: it's your top 20 albums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can understand some of the pityful choices, if you only know  50 records!!!!!!!

Please, guys, enhance your musical culture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Despite of that, I recognize that some guys here have happily surprising choices:

moonmadness by camel

It was extremely hard, sometimes, inside an artist work, to decide what's his best album:

For instance, Van Halen: 1984 or the first one?
Marillion: clutching at straws or misplaced childhood?
Rush: moving pictures, signals or hemispheres?
Tangerine dream: Pergamon, Tangram, white eagle, force majeure, Logos or underwater sunlight?
Yes: fragile, relayer, going for the 1 or close to the edge?
Genesis: Selling, Foxtrot, trick of tail, trespass or the lamb?
pink floyd: wish, wall, animals or dark?
pat metheny: secret story, wichita falls?
renaissance: scheherazade, ashes, song for all, novella turn of card or prologue?
Frank Zappa: studio tan , orchestral fav, sleep dirt, tinsel town, ship arriving, hot rats, waka, one size, apostrophe or roxy?
Vangelis: 1492, Mask, cairo, antarctica or chariots of fire?
IQ: seventh house, ever, tales from lush, wake or  subterranea? I must admit this group has made only excellent albums!!
Rick Wakeman (I think it was the hardest one):
king arthur, Henry 8, criminal, earthly connexion, journey? mmmmmmmmhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CaMEL: snow goose or moonmadness?
Alan parson: I robot, mystery or pyramid?

I think my post is complete! I expect tons of comments!

Well, after my last post I managed to discover Pink Floyd, and now I'm very glad I did. Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Maddle, Animals, The Wall and Devision Bell all have amazing songs on them. Pulse is an excellent live album, but the best is Roger Waters- In the Flesh. This is how I discovered Pink Floyd, and I'm still amazed.

Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds is another one I've been listening to recently. It really is an epic, a really ambitious work the came off briliantly. I love Forever Autumn, but some of the instrumental bits make me quite nervous sometimes. Really is very unsettling music.

I also disagree with greenback's comments. I certainly have my top 20, or even my top 50 list filled with MO, Yes, Pink Floyd, Harry Chapin, Rick Wakeman and Moby. I'm certainly guessing that those bands would make up at least 80% of my top 20, but I don't really mind. They are just my favourite albums at the moment. Having the same artist several times dosen't mean you don't like many different musical styles: just look at the huge range of Mike's music, and see how different all his albums are. Most of my favourite artists are like that, and several of my favourite albums have many different styles. I don't feel any need to broaden my horizons, but if another band or style really grabs me then it does, and I don't mind that either.

A very interesting topic but I really find myself unable to answer the question, because these days I'm not at all sure anymore which are and aren't my favourites. A lot has happened to me in the time I was away from the board and actually I have thrown away or sold most of the albums I considered my favourites back then, not because I don't like them any more but because I badly felt the need to get some fresh impulses in my life. I didn't come back to this board before I felt sure I had achieved that.
Perhaps a bit more information than you asked for, but I'm in the mood for posting it right now...  :p

Hunky Dory is amongst the worst albums I have ever heard. Ziggy isn't bad, but there are loads of Bowie albums that are better. I'm not a very big fan of glamrock.
