G'day everyone...

Now, normally discussions here are ultimately about similar artists. So now I'm wondering...

Which artist/group do you think is the complete opposite to Mike Oldfield?

This may be musically, lyrically, structurally (i.e. people involved) or some other way.

It would be interesting to see what possibilities there could be...and even more interesting (well, maybe not) if say a number of users are fans of this artist/group and Mike.

-Tim-

Who do I think? Um...the jury's out on that one.

Maybe 'modern composers' are the complete opposite. Because:

Most modern composers avoid 'tonality' (the stuff about scales & chords, you know...) since they feel it's outdated. They still use the classical instruments, however (piano, violin, etc.)

Mike uses normal (western) tonality. But he experiments a lot with sounds & instruments.

Just an idea. -Carsten-

The best opposite, for me, is someone who doesn't make music, because Mike Oldfield has play many, many different style (Almost All).

Developing dgcaer's interesting point: the artists who are the complete opposite of Mike are the ones who can't play, i.e. the various boy bands and people like Geri Halliwell and Britney Spears. I like them, but Mike is just on a different planet than the one inhabited by the above-mentioned people.

(Re: Ugo)

Steps ... I wonder who sings their songs? (since it's obviously not them!)

A correction: Ricky Martin IS NOT SPANISH.

I think he´s from Venezuela or another Latin American country. But anyway he doesn´t sing Spanish music at all in the way Mike does play it -Flamenco, Spanish Guitar style...-

So I reaaly think, for the commerciality and simplicity of Ricky Martin's stuff, and for the lack of real musical quality and meaning of lyrics... Ricky is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE.

Does anybody disagree?

um, Slipknot? - they rely entirely on image, have no talent, no musical worth, no variety, theres 9 of them (I think), they just make noise...their only similarity with Mike is that they both have dodgy lyrics!...

I think DeathMetal is absolute opposite to Mike's smooth, briliant, beautiful and master-piece of music.

I think you know what i exactly means.

i understand what you're saying Luke, you're English is better than my 'shit Francais'. I guess Slipknot fall under the death-metal category - seems like the anti-christs are the anti-Mikes - so Mike = Son Of God!!! (joke...)

anyway, I wouldn't argue with someone with '666' in their name wink...

Well, I don't pay attention to modern music much, so I don't really know. He dosen't really have an opposite, since he uses so many styles. Any of the boy-bands or girl-groups.How about Bardot?

What's all the fuss about? The anti-Mike is, of course, Jean-Michel Jarre!
