Rod Group: Members Posts: 25 Joined: June 2000 Posted: June 28 2000, 20:57 This is some of Mike's best music ever in my opinion. The record sounds a bit too modern tho. As if much of it was done with the help of new technology. It surely does not sound as "alive" as Amarok or Ommadawn. But this record really makes my soul fly... the music is beautiful and Sunjammer makes my skin crawl. The clean guitar part on Dark Star too! I love this record it was my first Mike Oldfield album and I think it's one of the ones I treasure the most. Plus anyone that hears me playing it asks "what in the world is that amazing music?!" Tremendous I say. Although you don't hear MO fans talk much about it as other albums. Oh I also have the LaserDisc of the TBII concert at Edinburgh Castle. STUNNING! Back to top

And the amazing and soulful bagpipe ensemble in Tattoo.. or the amazing nasal choir in Maya Gold... damn just thinking about it I am getting sweaty and cold. This album is a TREASURE! Back to top

Sounds in TB and TB2 are so different that I can't tell wich one I prefear ! That's depends of my mood. Sometimes I want violent TB1 Piltdown Man, sometimes some happy part of TB2... And, yes Weightless is IMO the best track of TB2 (and the pre-trevor horn version is much better than TB2 version !!!!), and listen to The Bell too ! There're some great version with Billy Connoly, or Viv Standshall (hey, that can be a good idea for a pole : who's the best MC for The Bell ?) And Sentinel is good too ! shaynw Group: Members Posts: 30 Joined: Nov. 1999 Posted: Aug. 26 2000, 07:23 I have to say TB2 along with Amarok are his 2 best albums, That is my opinion, I like TB2 so much better than 1 or 3, I thuink 3 is not that great at all really, TB1 is ok but soudns a bit dated now, TB2 is sonically perfect along with Amarok ! Anyway the 70's is unknown time for me ( I'm very young ), I like that feeling, I like meeting the past and I like listening to the works of 70's at most. Back to top

I can't say there's ever a time when I don't like TB2, but sometimes I wonder if it's a bit too precise and worked out or not (but then, is precise and worked our a bad thing or not?). You can argue that TB1 sounds dated now...but it also has a very 'organic' feel to it, which I believe is less present in TB2 (like the parts of TB1 where you can hear Mike breathing)...TB2 can be very fun to listen to...like many of Mike's works, there's a lot to discover in there. It's good to listen in different situations and hear different parts jump out...Perhaps what's there in TB2 is more intentional at times...more planned... I don't know really...two different albums revolving around one central spot (and I don't mean the middle of the CD/LP player, although that would be true, I suppose...). Back to top

It's the album that made me really discover Mike Oldfield's music. I've heard of him before [Moonlight Shadow...who hasn't? ], but this is where I really discovered him. I saw his TB2 Edimburgh performance on TV...I was literally hypnotized. Alex --> Yes, Weightless is great. But the best track is IMHO Red Dawn... Korgscrew --> I'm not too sure about whether TB2 being too perfect is a positive or negative aspect of it. But I must admit that I like it better than TB1. For one simple reason: the melodies. The original ones were "difficult", complicated (starting from the rhytmical division of the very first one...), the new ones are more simple, more understandable, but not at all less beautiful. Plus, Mike's breathing on the original opus only goes to prove (IMHO) its authenticity. "Organicity" (always IMHO) is present also in TB2. For the first few listens, I think that mindset dominates. Then you slowly begin to appreciate it on its own merit. And for me, Maya Gold, smoothing its way out of Altered State (someone correct me if I have the wrong track--I don't have the case with me), is the best bit on the album. Back to top

There seems to be a lot more going on in this album than in the original. Like one melody is going, there's one in the background, and then another one coming up shortly afterward. I know trying to learn this one the piano it was kind of difficult, because i had to pick which melodies to play (especially in Sentinel). Overall its one of my favs, although i'm not too fond of Altered State. It's just a little tooo altered for my taste. But the pianos in the background are pretty cool. What's up with that yellow bell though? Looks kind of hippy-ish. -------------- Terrible, Wonderful, Crazy, Perfect. Back to top

Altered State- I liked this from the very beginning, except for the stupid "where's your mummy" and so on. I agree with Thomas, the guitar at the end rocks. But I prefer the intro from the original, with the drums building up into the track. The Bell- nice track. Bells don't sound very belly though- sample again, like the bagpipes? Alan Rickman must have just been to D.F. Gumby's operating theatre before recording his part though. My favourite tracks are Sentinel, Sunjammer, The Bell, Weightless, Great Plain, and Altered State. The worst bit about this album is Moonshine. AWFUL!! Whereas the Pornhipe was fine, and most people can tolerate it, Moonshine just seems ridiculous (to my mind). -Tim- Back to top

cp Group: Members Posts: 46 Joined: Feb. 2001 Posted: Feb. 28 2001, 09:55 I tried to post to this topic a few hours okay, but it doesn't seem to have appeared, so what I'm rambling about now is a second attempt. TB2 is so similar to the original in many ways that it's hard to classify which one is better overall. TB2 is certainly a lot more polished. The Bell is nowhere near as good as the original, right from when the Grand Piano is announced. To begin with, I don't really like the new MC. The repeated tune has nowhere near as much strength as the original. I'm not sure that the Bells are just samples, but I think that they've been too close to Mike's Digital Sound Processor . They don't really stand out from the rest of the instruments. Altered State is good, a light-hearted alternative to the original. The Piltdown man seems to have lost his ferocity over time (perhaps being kept in Mike's cellar for 17 years had something to do with it). The backing track makes him (the Piltdown Man) sound like he's no longer in the stone age, but in a 20th centure zoo instead. Weightless is excellent, as many other people have stated. I think that the more-than-slightly distorted guitar parts (Dark Star and Sunjammer, IIRC) aren't as good a they were in the original TB, although they're more "pleasant"-sounding for those who don't like distorted guitars. Moonshine isn't complete rubbish, as Tim implied, but it seems to be lacking in melody - I suppose it wouldn't be a bad backing track to compose a Pornhipe on top of -CP. Back to top

I'm not too fond of the bell, not the version on TB1 either. As for the piltdown man, I'm ashamed to say I've only listened through the 2nd part of TB1 a few times, although that album is absolutely one of my favourites, at least the 1st part. I think Maya Gold is the best track on TB2, those organ licks in the background makes me go all wet and crazy..Clear light is a favourite too, it makes me think of dolphines for some reason.... Side two surpasses clearly TB1's and Side one stays at the same level in my opinion. I prefer so far The Bell than TB1's counterpart.
