Did someone sample Mike, or am I getting crazy?

Sounds like the owl sound of MFTB

What do you reckon?

p.s. don`t listen to the rest of it. it´s dreadful.

It isn't the same sound. And yes, that is dreadful.

I also find it hard to believe that anyone who could produce drivel like that would have heard a Mike Oldfield piece to sample it in the first place.

Sorry that's MFTB, not MOTB. It was 3 Am in the morning so I wasn't thinking all that straight.

Sometimes I check out different kinds of music, just to check out what's happening in the scene.

Everyone should always keep an open ear for new developments. Well spotted by the way. Mind you, every owl sounds the same so it may not be a sample from MOTB.

It's a preset sound from… an E-mu module I think (one of the Proteus ones probably). There is a LOT of Proteus samples on the whole Heaven's Open album.

Anyway, chances are they were just using that rather than sampling Mike directly, or got a similar owl sound from some other sound effects library.

As it happens, I am currently working on a project that involves owl sounds, and I can assure you that it is not so! ;)

The sound is all over 808 State's Pacific State, circa 1989.  I doubted Mike had sampled them, but thanks to Mat for clarification!

Just for fun I pulled out some samples I have from an E-mu Proteus and did this (none of it is sampled from MFTB):

Thank you for starting and stopping with the intro, Mat - I'm not sure if I want to know how much of it is owed to Proteus, Korg or whoever...

That said, please tell me that - sampled noises aside -  he is at least responsible for the divine 3D sound section! :)

Curious fellow that I am, and guided by other topics such as Rileman wondering and discovering the Proteus, I've been following up a little and this is a useful little page of samples
http://www.synthmania.com/proteus_1.htm

Listening to the factory demo (also found that on YouTube) is fun too.  If only I had timing, rythym, talent...
