Hi, I have a Roland synth SH 2000 that my mum had for a few decades. Mike Oldfield went and visited my mum in Doest to buy back two keyboards that he had traced back to her, and the story goes that she would only sell him one and has kept the Roland all this time. I have a copy of the cheque he wrote for the other keyboard, along with an autograph and nothing else concrete apart from things like his business contact details in her address book (I am clearing out her possessions as she’s unfortunately died and kept so much paperwork, diaries etc. as well as instruments and music).
I don’t really know where to start with selling/valuing the synth. It’s in excellent condition, all working and in its original hard case. I’d quite like to offer it to Mike himself if I could as he’d taken so much trouble to track it down all those years ago.
I’m based in the south of England if that makes any difference.
All thoughts gratefully received.

So, SH2000s in good working order go from between £700 and £1000 on eBay. Interesting that you say Mike O was trying to buy them back, how did your mum get them, were they his originally?

I suspect that Mike himself wouldn't be interested any more, he's "retired" these days and living out a quiet life in The Bahamas "messing about in boats" to quote Kenneth Grahame.

If it's in as good as condition as you say, and you can show the provenance that it was actually one of Mike O's original instruments, you might be able to fetch a bit more from a keen collector. His guitars go for all sorts of silly money these days amongst hard-core fan collectors :)

Yes, ebay would be a good place to start and with Mike's name attached it could go for more than it would without his name, it would be interesting to work out which track he used it on too which might add the the value. I think there are specialist instrument sellers out there, I know there are for guitars, Mike's Gibson double neck was sold by one earlier this year.

Mike used the SH-2000 for Platinum and Incantations, where the "clarinet" preset is used as a solo sound on the majority of the tracks.
I would say that it's used QE2 too, though it's not credited on the sleeve (solo parts for Taurus I and Conflict).

I'm very interested in WHEN Mike tried to buy back the synthesizer.

There also a you tube clip on this site showing the same synth being used on Blue Peter by Mike https://youtu.be/q4lb0gXOq4I?si=PGfnmpAi9CAmVsbI
4mins. 51sec
….but how on earth I can know/prove it’s the same one I do not know.
I have a copy of the cheque Mike wrote for the other keyboard, when he visited, and it’s dated 29August 1989…does that help?

I think "Guilty" uses the same keyboard, but perhaps that's from the "Platinum" sessions. I think "Guilty" is the track where the SH-2000 is most prominent.
