I've just experimented uploading avatars for the first time - picking a random Google image, then selecting to view that image and copying and pasting the search window's link to the YourControlPanel/PersonalInfo/AvatarOptions window worked wonders.
If you meant creating an original image then you'll need qualities I can't provide: a recommendation of a good avatar site of all those available, in order to create the online presence for your image; and any discernible artistic talent...
My experimenting done, I've returned to the option you've selected in the interim. A good few people have the Five Miles Out pre-installed avatar - I'm one of the handful who have gone with Fina, since Skies of Arcadia is one of my all-time favourite games.
