Just be careful. It sounds weird coming from someone who does not believe in ghosts, the supernatural, and only minimally religous. I've had some bad happenings on more than one Fri. the 13th. Losing Wallets, Jobs, etc. No Sh&^. I take minimal risks and actions on Fri. the 13th. Jim

(Hi Deb)

Yeah, superstitions are funny, aren't they?  As far as Friday the 13th goes... I guess I have my little quirks about it, but I suppose everyone does to some degree or another.  If you decide to cheat fate and just stay in, is a plane more likely to crash into your house than if you had gone out?  You may as well carry on with your day and hope for the best.

I ponder how much of superstition is actually rooted in OCD.  What I mean is that perhaps superstition is an extension of all the myriad little rituals that we each indulge in every day, consciously or not.  Like, if a guy always avoids stepping on the cracks in the pavement, is it just a subconscious compulsion or does he fear personal disaster if he doesn't?  Or a bit of both?  Or neither?

Excuse me, I'm going to go check that the oven is off for the 4th time.

;)

I agree. I think superstition and OCD are rooted to the same anxieties.

My favourite film of all time is "As good as it gets" - with Jack Nicholson's character trying to manage his OCD, and he also avoids the cracks in the pavement. I liked Helen Hunt's character - they both got an Oscar in fact.

There was a lot of wisdom in that film......

Back on topic...

Never criticize a man before you have walked a mile in his shoes.
That way, when you do, he is a mile away with no shoes on.

Can’t remember where it came from – sorry.

A few years back I made a piece of music where I incorporated a number of sound files from that particular movie.Anyway great film I agree. And in keeping with the thread I guess, here are a few of Melvin`s/Jack Nicholson`s own little Pearls Of Wisdom from the movie..

Quit worrying. You'll be back on your knees in no time.

People who talk in metaphors outta shampoo my crotch.

Lady to Melvin..How do you write women so well?
Melvin...I think of a man.Then I take away reason and accountability.  :p

There is a flipside to the guy as well of course..

Carol/Helen Hunt...Pay me a compliment,Melvin. I need one.
Melvin.... You make me want to be a better man.

Isn't this Elvis Presley? From a 1970s spoken intro to a song? :D

There is another "speech-in-the-middle-of-a-song" which is a fav of mine. It's from the Blues Brothers' version of "Everybody needs somebody", and it goes like this:

You know, people, when you do find that somebody, hold that woman, hold that man, love him, hold him, squeeze her, please her, hold her; squeeze and please that person, give 'em all your love; signify your feelings with every gentle caress, because it's so important to have that special somebody to hold, kiss, miss, squeeze and please!

But yes, there were many of pearls of wisdom ....also liked when he spoke to the clients in the psychiatrist's waiting room: -

What if this is as good as it gets.
