I love Rite of Man! Really good lyrics. Genuinely funny!

But...it doesn't sound a lot like Mike Oldfield and it also sounds like it was knocked up in a few minutes on the Fairlight computer with a quick vocal overdub.

The songwriting style reminds me of Tom Newman's.
It's like an 80s equivalent of Don Alfonso or "Speak".

I wonder how many of the Moonlight Shadow 7" owners who played the b-side more than once? To a casual listener it must sound totally bizarre!

Little talked about fact:
Mike's personal assistant Jeremy Parker has songwriting credit on Rite of Man!

Was it really made in the 80's ?

I always just assumed it was a leftover from the era of the big four.

The pipes, some of the drums and the "ooohhh" synth all sound like Fairlight synth sounds ca Five Miles Out. Don't they?

@ Milamber: I didn't pick Amarok because this topic is called "One Track a Week", isn't it? Amarok isn't a track. It's an opera. :D Re. Rite of Man, it's obviously part of Mike's silly series and it could've been made at any time. That series has never really ended, up to right now. :) The ooooohhhs and the accordion are definitely synthetic. The rest, I have no idea. It may very well be a seventies composition or even older - "Man in the Rain" was an Eighties composition released in the Nineties. :) Thanks to Spinne here, I've got a de-clicked version of "Rite of Man" as a FLAC file.

@ lars: I have the 7'' and the 12'' of MS, and I can guarantee that I have played the B-side of the 7'' way, way more times than I played the A-side, because I very much prefer the so-called "Extended Version" of MS to the more common one on the 7'' (and on the album). And of course I love "Rite of Man".

The Rite of Man

it's an oldie but a goodie, regardless of when it was made.

The Lyrics are apt too Milamber...boomerangs, coming back etc!  ;)....

So now we wind our merry merry way

to break the life monastic

there's one or two words I'd like to say

as we trip the light fantastic

to hold a course and forge a way

here's to another folkish ?

do not dismay tru-alai-lay

speak up for the right of man

speak up, speak up, speak up for the rite of man

speak up, speak up, speak up for the rite of man

take your fortunes when you can

make your way like superman

come back like a boomerang

speak up for the right of man

speak up, speak up, speak up for the rite of man

speak up, speak up, speak up for the rite of man

take your fortunes when you can

make your way like superman

come back like a boomerang

speak up for the right of man

speak up, speak up, speak up for the rite of man

speak up, speak up, speak up for the rite of man

take your fortunes when you can

make your way like superman

come back like a boomerang

speak up for the right of man

speak up, speak up, speak up for the rite of man

speak up, speak up, speak up for the rite of man

take your fortunes when you can make

Isn't it "Here's to another folk cliché"?

@ lars: yes it is, although I find it hard to understand what the folk cliché is. Maybe "hold a course and forge a way" ? I'm not familiar with either of those phrases. Ah, and of course there's a great pun throughout the lyrics, on "right" vs. "rite".

@ bee: "trip the light fantastic" is of course the ever-present misunderstood lyric from "A Whiter Shade of Pale" which everyone gets wrong, the original lyric being "we tripped a light fandango" - equally meaningless. :D Lots of people got that wrong - even Sir Paul a.k.a. Macca got it wrong.

@ wiga: that's not the original title of that song, is it? Never heard of the guy, but the song is catchy... although I have to agree with the comments on YouTube about it being very sad as well.

"Rite Of Man" sounds a little bit like "Stop The Cavalry" by Jona Lewie :

Captain cavern - SNAP!!

By the way, where does "Rite of Man" come from - is it on a B-Side?

I like it's random abrupt ending. I don't know, he's a joker that Mike Oldield!!   :D

Aah, it's a B-Side of "Moonlight Shadow" is it.

@ wiga: there's lots of silly songs which "Rite of Man" may remind you of. There's Mike's own "Portsmouth" and "Mike's Reel". There's the Scouts song, "Ging Gang Goolie" (thanks a lot, Milamber!! :D). And "Lily the Pink" by The Scaffold. And "C Moon" by Paul McCartney... ahem, Wings. :) There are lots.

By the original rules, I accidentally earned the Rite last week when saying hello again to Milamber - thanks again for another little gap in my knowledge filled. :)

Your homework this week is Jewel in the Crown live.  Horseguards is the obvious version but if you have access or fondness for anything you may know from 1999, be my guest.  Extra bonus points if you come across anything on YouTube that is sourced from the video or Spanish TV and has a bit of bass.  Carrie is not shaking her head because her guitar isn't working!

Nice tune. A bit basic, a little similiar to Jungle Gardenia. I haven't listened to TBIII, but this is one of the tracks I remember.
The Korg M1 is not a good synthesizer and here it sounds out of place in the lush production and velvet guitars. It was also very outdated at the time. Mike's fiddling with the modulation wheel is kind of weird.
The bass player is hot! :p
I haven't seen this concert before because I'm not too fond of the music Mike did after 1991, but this is quite OK.

Jewel in the Crown...ahh yes TBIII The peoples album

It never fails to suprise me the warm reception this album gets when played to C.E.Nincopoops

Actually i have used Jewel a few times when someone has asked "Mike who".

A great simple hook and a decent recent attempt at a decent rhythm.

Just played it, still love it...Nice pick Cav :)

And he had his best hair period then too..A Jewel of a Crown

Sorry

Well I was there - 1999 at Birmingham NEC!!!

Best concert I've ever been to - and watching this track live takes me back to that moment when I was so glad to be there. Love all TBIII, and this chilled track is part of the whole - very Mike Oldfield.

The only irritating part was probably that bassist and her sexy gyrating! But maybe that's what she had to do to keep in time. :)
