Can anybody tell me what has Mike Oldfield got to do with a well-known song by Paul Hardcastle called "19" [the one which used pieces from old newsreels about the Vietnam War] ? MO is credited among the writers...

COOOOOL!!! Is that true? smile I like "19".

The only thing I can guess that MO is credited is the fact that the "pingling" synthesizer tune on "19" sounds just like the tune in TB where the instruments are called up.

Hi, Dolphin. Sorry for this late reply but I only saw your post right now.

YES IT'S TRUE!! smile If you want, can send you scans of the two covers of the compilation discs I have, where "M. Oldfield" is clearly mentioned among the writers.

So that's what it is. A sample. Now I got it. smile It's all because of today's record companies' (and copyright) laws. I think that when the original 45rpm came out, MO wasn't mentioned anywhere. Now, anyone reprinting that song is obliged to mention MO simply because Hardcastle used a fragment from a MO-written tune... smile smile

It does sound similar, but can anyone confirm that Mike is not credited on the original 45?

I had this thought that maybe he did the bit where we hear probably the only thing that could be called a verse/chorus:

"All those who remember the War,
They won't forget what they've seen;
Destruction for men in their prime
Whose average age was nineteen."

To me, that sounded like it maybe didn't quite fit the rest, especially when Paul whacks it on as a sample ("D-D-D-D-Des-D-Des-Destruction")

IMHO that verse is the only thing turning a rather incoherent jumble of samples (altough all of them are linked by their common theme) into a very decent dance song. wink

I don't have the original 45 so I can't really say if Mike was credited on it. smile
