Good question ... honest answer would be ...

Tubular Bells II was a very nice attempt
to translate his opus 1 into the 90s, at at time
lots of ambient acts were influenced by Oldfield.

A lot of younger people who were into dance music
picked up this modern version of Tubular Bells ... it was cool.
Every Tubular move he did afterwards was too much for me.

The Songs of Distant Earth might be his best post Virgin album.
I really love it, because it sounds like a full album trip,
but yet a lot of parts can be considered as proper tracks.

The Voyager was too mellow.
I ended up convincing myself it should be good because it was Mike.

Guitars didn't touch me anymore.
I got the idea he was pushing buttons and delivering
guitar licks in his genius kind of way without being passionate.
This was the last album I bought ... I listened to it twice
and gave it to my brother as a birthday present.

Tubular Bells III made me a bit angry ... honestly.
Why call it TBIII when it has really little to do with Tubular Bells at all.
It could have been Crises II as well. Mike was just recycling.
Even using his most famous albums name to score.

Another thing is this urge of him to link his albums
to various multi media experiences or events ... being trendy.

When I knew his next album would be called
The Millenium Bell I stopped caring about his music.
I haven't bothered listening to his 21th century albums.
My brother does and he's telling me Mike is playing his game.
But even he wasn't to keen about Oldfields last album.

And please let's not talk about the rerecorded Tubular Bells
and the remixed Tubular Bells (I was so hoping to buy this deluxe
edition with "original" (bonus) material ... but he screwed it up again).

When I discovered The Best of Tubular Bells in the shops
a few years ago I was laughing out loud (people were staring at me).
How proud can you be having released more than 10 different versions of Tubular Bells?
Ofcourse Mike's the first one who was the right to fuck himself.

This all may sound rather harsh in the ears of todays fans.
But I really can't believe what a lazy and boring ass Mike became.
But there's hope ... maybe my decision to log in here
might push me to go and reconsider his youngest work.

"Only time will tell .."

Why would just a name (The Millennium Bell) - make you stop caring or listening to further albums - when you used to be such a fanatic?

.....

I thought I summed it up.
It was a gradation of disappointments.

The Voyager, Guitars, Tubular Bells III ...

Four albums in a row that made me lose interest.
The Millenium Bell was that last drop.

I have heard bits from it at my brothers house ...
... but no spark anymore.

Well not really - it kind of seems like all or nothing. There are a whole bunch of albums that you idealize and a whole bunch that you denegrate. Even Mike himself is either all good or a "lazy and boring ass." It's all very extreme at either ends of the spectrum, with not much integration going on.

I'm sorry that I can't explain it any better.
I can't see the extremes you see.

Platinum and Earth Moving are minor albums in my opinion.
It's not that I worship or adore all his Virgin work blindly.

The albums after Songs of Distant Earth
have their moments too, but Mike lost his magic touch in my eyes.
Maybe I lost my touch with his music ... maybe both.

I can listen to Guitars and hear nice bits.
But I've heard it all before and better in his previous work.
There is no connection anymore, no sparks.

His endless recycling of anything called Tubular or Bells
is a way of releasing material I don't like anymore.

Compare it with Sting or Paul Simon.
They also lost their magic touch in my opinion.
Ofcourse they remain great composers and musicians.
But their youngest work hasn't got that same appeal anymore.

Same with Mike.
Eventually I walked away from his music.
