I think an interesting solution to this was presented by the digital version of the recent Nine Inch Nails album Hesitation Marks which was made available (at no extra cost if purchased via the official site) as both a "loud" version for portable earphone listening and an entirely separate "audiophile" mix for people with decent home setups.
