Well, here's a related question: what genre - if any - has Mike not explored?

Hmm... Correct me if I drop any incorrect names:

Jazz;
Ska;
Hip hop;
Tango;
Ambient (a la Thursday Afternoon and similar works, Eno related or not);
New Wave (is this even a genre? Or something of an overall image?);
Hardcore punk;
Thrash metal (and all those obscure metal labels, e.g. death metal, doom metal, black metal, speed metal, mathcore, folk metal, etc.);
Samba;
Soul;
Funk;
Post Rock (wonder if Oldfield would be willing to collaborate with Sigur Rós, or maybe Mogwai? I wonder how it would be);
Mambo;
And most important of all: Zydeco!!

Shame on YOU, Mike! SHAME on you!

Shame ON, you!

Samba? Once a friend here,who's a Mike's fan for years,said the end of Crises(the track) reminds him of "escola de samba"   :laugh:  :laugh:  :laugh:  :laugh:

There are some interesting stuff on Brazilian music - not bossa nova and samba - that would be a nice try for Mike!
Capoeira's sounds like on Tr3s Lunas doesn't count  :laugh:

I don't find Reggae a surprising style for a guitarist.  At some stage when you are jamming on an elec guitar you will accidentally come up with a reggae type of beat - it's fairly natural with some combinations of chords and strumming action.  My guess it wasn't planned but was a beat he struck up with his guitar one day and recorded it - coming back later to work out a track based on it.

Well, jazz comes in so many flavours that the term probably doesn't have much meaning now. It used to mean a kind of music that relied heavily on improvisation - but that was always present in classical music (for example, in the cadenza of a concerto).

Of course, one part of Tubular Bells 2003 is called "Jazz".

If Mike really does visit this site sometimes, as has been claimed, perhaps all these unexplored genres could inspire the next 10 or so albums!

Good call on the end of Crises - it's quite tangent to a frenzied samba-esque beat, and in fact I like that clumsy European swing. But then again, Crises is plain awesome.

By the way, what is the song we can call the first of Mike's ventures into reggae: In High Places or In the Pool? I forget now which one came first.

The scat bit in Platinum was a bit of a surprise. I don't think anyone saw it coming at the time. But it's great of course.

For unpleasant surprises of the same type I'd say Magic Touch was a bit of a shock, the way it was just a straight AOR song. Same thing with Islands which jumped straight into eurovision song contest territory without a warning.

Of all Mike's songs the one i dislike most is Islands.Good album generally but i really do not like this one.I guess Bonnie Tyler's voice may be an aquired taste but the whole track with the sax solo just doesn't sit right.Flying Start on the other hand is one of my favourites.
