"Moonlight Shadow" has got so many covers because it's Mike Oldfield's greatest hit ever. Even "To France" doesn't have as many... and check out how many YouTube videos are there for "Wrekorder Wrondo".

I never heard of "Wreckorder Wrondo" until today!

Is it a B-side?

I found this -

@ wiga: I quoted that just as an example of a not-really-well-known Mike Oldfield piece which, as such, is unlikely to get covered by anyone. :D It's one of his "funny" instrumental tracks from the Seventies - as the description on YouTube says, it was originally part of a 4-track vinyl release called Take Four. The 12'' was printed on white vinyl.

Finally to mention: it's sung by the fans of german soccer club Schalke 04 - not as ml, but as "lalaalllalaaa... FC Schalke!"

There is another version of moonlight shadow: Juliane Werdings (horrible to me) german cover version "Nacht voll Schatten"  :D

Juliane Werding was 3 weeks on number one in the German TV show "Hitparade" with her cover version "Nacht voll Schatten" (1983-10-07 until 1983-10-20).
(refer to http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki....parade) =)
I had to live in fear for the whole October 1983 with Mrs. Werdings version in the German radio stations instead of Mikes great original song.
Even today I tremble with fear whenever the first guitar chords of "Moonlight Shadow" are played in a german radio station if it would be Juliane Werding and not Maggie Reilly's great voice to come.

If you want to get the "real feeling", please have a look at youtube

Youtube Nacht voll Schatten

But be prepared

Edith says: ok, I'd just seen (heard) above the "viper fan version". If you survived that "Viper" version, Mrs. Werding will sound like a nightingale.

I watched nearly all the covers above, and 99% are awful. I didn't think that the song would be that hard to cover, but the only one I can listen to more than once is The Shadows version.
