It depends on the song. Sometimes the content will justify terminal, fading repetition (for example, it would work quite well on a song about falling asleep after a day's work at the factory!;) But yes, generally the form is overused.

Another blight on pop music is the tendency for the beat of the music to fall on unimportant words (or, worse, syllables of the words so that the word is distorted). Mr Oldfield is sometimes guilty of the first of these: for example, in "Runaway Son", where the song's emphasis falls on the unimportant word "for" (in "Salvation for the runaway son"). Still, even Brahms' songs have the occasional "false stress", when he's unwilling to distort the melody to change things.
