Review of the platinum collection in the April issue of Mojo magazine.
Mike Oldfield *** The Platinum Collection Ahead of his autobiography, Oldfield's career spread across three Cds,
Never cool, and with a taste for the odd musical car-crash moment (as evidenced by the appearance of Bonnie Tyler on one 80s track), Mike Oldfield has nevertheless created a moving body of work. Gathering together extended excerpts from his classic 70s recordings, from Tubular Bells to Platinum, which were and are groundbreaking in their meld of pop, smphonic, ethnic and avant0garde music, CD1 is essential. CD2 collects Oldfield's attempts at the perfect pop tune, although for every hit (Moonlight Shadow) there are some clunkers (Mistake is just that), while CD3 is the post-stardom Oldfield making a brand of new-age dance music which, if nothing else, shows an artist willing to take risks. Bold and much more inventive than you perhaps remember, these are some of the finest pop melodies ever recorded.

coming from Mojo magazine, which in the past hasnt been too keen to attribute positive criticism with Mike's work, this is a pretty good review.
