Don't want to sound cheesy. I'm not a fan of guitar solos, and I prefer to listen to how they fit in with the rest of the song (fortunately, in Mike's case, it almost always does). If I were to choose one, I'd chose Part 2 of Platinum - the self-titled one. Mike's guitar is really singing out the melody, and it's really catchy. The only similar thing I can think of is Robert Fripp in 'Red'. That's a really subtle work. Likewise, I tip my hat to his guitar on Part 4 of said piece, "North Star". More guitar singing. Few guitarists can do that.

I'd just like to say, one of my fave songs by Mike, for sentimental reasons, is Tattoo on TBII, and the guitar solo near the end kicks ass!

My favourite is the last minute of guitaring in Bell - Tubular Bells 2, when he dumps the electric and plays a spanish/classical.  OK, it's not a screaming, wailling piece, but it's just perfect - tears my heart out every time I hear it.  He changed it on the TB2/3 DVD, and it's almost like he's figuring it out as he goes along.

I love his work in Five Miles Out too, if I need a dose of overdrive.

I'm absolutely in love with that section too - but in the original Tubular Bells. It's chilling.

Jon Anderson once said that he thought Mike should get a Grammy for the Shine solo. He never actually did, though.

I think the solo in portsmouth from TMB live in Berlin is brilliant, ive just been watching it today, and whilst its not the fastest most technical solo hes done it just has a really good feel to it (probably because he really gets into it and enjoys it).

On a more seasonal note (ive been listening to the crimbo EP again), the acoustic bits in wonderfull land are great as well as the acoustic solo at about 2 min into vivaldi's concerto in c... phowar

When it comes to guitar solos, the first one that comes to mind is the long one after Incantations Side 3 Fanfare. This is called "Alterations" in the "Amarok Player" track list. I know this is not an official name, but any name is better than none.

He got Best Instrumental Composition at the Grammy awards in New York for Tubular Bells in 1975.

Anyway, my favourite guitar solo is also the one in Shine but I like them all, really. I wonder why Magic Touch solo is such underrated.

Another award:

The video for "Let There Be Light" was most impressive, and can be seen in digital form on the re-released version which was available in 1995. The producers of the video went on to win an award for the ground-breaking technique used to create it.

I am going to listen to every single album and list every guitar solo I love but I know already that I prefer the hard rock guitar riffs by far and the first heavy riff in Tubular Bells is still the one that rocks me the most. Will return to this post as soon as possible.
