Do you think maybe JRR Tolkien got high? Sometimes I wonder, heh...His photos of him with a pipe. The stuff written in those books so spaced out......so much imagination. You never know.

Dunno about opium but i suspect the good professor had been at the hemp derivitives.I live not too far from Oxford and he and CS Lewis used to drink together in the Eagle And Child in St Giles. The pub's still there but is now a 'sports pub'.Damn shame.
As far as i know he didn't play but who knows? On a slightly different subject has anyone heard Leonard Nimoy's song The Ballad Of Bilbo Baggins? If not i'm sure it's on youtube.Buttock clenchingly embarrasing but so funny.

I have the Shatner & Nimoy album.Very entertaining..Although I must say Shatner far out does Nimoy in both sheer originalirity and hilarity. The Baggins track is about as good as it gets really. He does a version of If I Had A Hammer, which quite frankly makes you wish you had a hammer yourself...To smash up your cd player.

Who say's Tolkien had no musical ability, he was a great lyricst, his words were often put to music by Donald Swann, the half of duo Flanders and Swann.

Some of you may remember singing this F&S song in school
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjnOj9O16_I

Not F&S, but a beatiful version of "The Road Goes Ever On" The Hobbit's walking song

Another thing. How many people were inspired by JRR to make music? Led Zep.....lyrics full of references to LOTR. A band named "Gandalf", recruited Steve Hackett on guitar for a time. Another band "Shadowfax"....new age chill music.....many more examples. It's simple, JRR had so many "cool new words", they have been used for so much. I've known people with dogs named Gandalf and Shadowax(no shit....or shite if you prefer). JRR ignited imaginations just like Gene Roddenberry(Star Trek) to make music and use "catch phrases" that have been used for band names or songs or albums. If JRR did not play music...he sure inspired it after he died.....I always think of Robert Plant singing "In the darkest depths of Mordor...." Ramble On I think it was. Goin' off to bed now Tubes...

Very true. And on the same song Percy sings "but Gollum and the evil ones crept up and stole away with her".
There's an even rarer and frankly bloody strange album by a keyboardist called Bo Hanson from somewhere in Scandinavia who got some friends together in a house in a fjord in Norway and made a record called 'Music Inspried By The Lord Of The Rings'.Really wierd record.I think he made similar records inspired by The Hobbit and,of all things,Watership Down.

Marillion were originaly called Silmarillion I seem to remember. They certainly took their name from that book anyway. While there are also bands called Amon Amarth,Cirith Ungol,Gorgoroth,Mordor and Ephel Duath. It`s a fair bet you wont see many of those dudes turning up at T in the Park.

I came across this Slovak Metal band by the name of "Galadriel" must also be Lord Of The Rings fans , http://www.galadriel.sk/web09/content/band.htm

Oh yes whilst on the subjct of LOTR, I do believe that "My Fairy King" "Ogre Battle" and "The March Of The Black Queen" by Queen were inspired after Freddie Mercury had ben reasding Tolkien    :)  :D .

I have took a look at Chandler's website today and I have seen that they use a Mike's famous guitar on their second hand and vintage section. I think you will find it very easily...under the titles...
