I am looking at putting together a Mike Oldfield convention in Reading in the UK on 6th July 2013 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Tubular Bells.  Usual convention activities, special guests, memorabilia, record fair/swap shop, rare music/DVDs and live performances from two very well known Oldfield related artists. Cost would be about £40.

Who would be interested in coming along to such an event?

Best, Paul

Sounds great, it's been a long wait for a big UK gathering. And with so much activity from Mike, this is a perfect time!

Also will be nice to put faces to the names we see here and on Facebook. And to maybe get some of the musicians here to Jan together?

I would really like to know much more before parting with £40. Reading is a horrible place to drive around at the best of times. I'm still yet to be convinced that the effort will be worthwhile.

I will post more when all the details are confirmed. There will be a convention during the day and two live shows in the evening.

If anyone has any suggestions please post them here and we'll do our best to accommodate :-)

We have found a venue which would serve for the convention activities during the day and has an adjacent venue for the live music in the evening.  Folks have also suggested a jamming session and an online musicVR game.  There are folks bringing rare video footage and there'll be some merchandise too.

The day venue has a cafe for food, drinks and the night time venue has a bar.

More details when I can share them, but in the meantime, any suggestions welcome :-)

A Q&A interview with guests is always good one. Through the day. To keep it interesting.
What about a live Skypp interview with MIKE !
A jamming session usually means a noise !.. AVOID !
Get Ryan to come and play his arrangements of Incantations, etc.
Projector for rare video, so we can all see it.

The London Tub Bells III convention was a disappointment really.

Having a chance to play and share information with other musicians would certainly increase my level of interest! I'm sure things could be arranged so that anyone who considers that kind of activity "a noise" wouldn't have to listen to it (personally, I've had some great musical experiences jamming with other people from the fan community).

Is anyone lined up to do the sound for the performances yet? If not, I'd happily volunteer my services there. I dare say I'm likely to put more care into it than the average jobsworth engineer...

HI Korgscrew
Hope I didnt sound like a musical snob....re the"noise"
Im a well worn musician, and myself enjoy a jam, but it can be like "jazz fusion", far more enjoyable for the players than the audience.
Perhaps if there was a "jam room" off from the main performance area, where people could prepare pieces for performance...?
BUT
I think your right about having somewhere for musicians to meet and swap ideas and contact info would be great.
And unsympathetic sound engineers ..... !! Dont get me started...
Only in the UK, though, as outside the UK, the bands are usually treated with respect.
So I think your offer to help, should be snapped up
Hope this event happens.

Nothing wrong with some good old fashioned noise! Bad jamming on the other hand...

Book slow to ensure phlegmatism.  The day of destiny happens to be my Saturday on at work and while exchanges aren't impossible, being back on time for Sunday may mean I need to arrange a holiday to coincide.  I won't get confirmation of that for another few weeks at least, so I shan't be surprised if Paul posts the Sold Out notice well before then.  I'll see you all if I do land a late booking - hope you all enjoy it regardless of my attendance. :)

Booked my ticket and hotel room this morning. Hope it won't be too noisy! Will there be a quiet corner provided, with mugs of cocoa and comfy chairs?
