I'd never made that connection, but you're right, the two pieces are similar. Which one is better is obviously a matter of taste, but The Piano certainly is a modern classic and I've always liked it a lot. The film is also quite intriguing, I remember it as a highlight among "stuff that was popular during my adolescence".
