I need advice.

Home Recording Software.

I am using a Hp Amd athlon 2.6 dual core laptop with asio drivers
installed.
Every single program I try I suffer considerable lag when trying to record Drums (Roland) makes recording impossible .
Have tried numerous settings on all programs to reduce latency but not to a playable level   .
Is this something that requires a desktop to accomplish ?
Any help or programs or settings to recommend would be great. :)

Are you using the ASIO drivers that came with your card? If the answer is yes, have you tried ASIO4ALL by any chance? In my case (Cakewalk UA-25EX on Windows Vista & 7 x64) ASIO4ALL works a lot better than Cakewalk's drivers.

Also, if it's an external USB card, make sure it's plugged into the laptop directly, not through a USB hub. And if possible, don't share the same USB bus with other devices.

Thanks NabLa
Just using my laptop no external anything.
Also when using Reaper when selecting asio no sound is herd.
So I used wavemapper setting. Does that mean its not configured properly.(asio)
And yes i have Asio4all.
The sample I just put in Fantracks had to be played without me actually hearing myself except for rubber pads.(due to latency).

Only way of getting decent latency in Windows is with ASIO I'm afraid.

When you tell reaper, or any other app for that matter, to use ASIO, doesn't a new icon appear near the computer clock? Through it you can config ASIO4ALL to use this or that device, make sure you have the correct one selected for input and playback.

Can I ask how you're recording though? Laptops mostly come with inputs that work with the type of microphone you use for Skype.

Click on the spanner icon, that'll bring up the full config window. Make sure the device you want to use (possibly the only one listed there) has the power icons as ON on the device itself, and on its in and outs.

I'm sure you've tried this but lowering the buffer size (normally under Audio Preferences or something similar in your application) can have a huge effect on latency.

The trouble with lowering the buffer size is that your computer will likely be able to do less in terms of real-time processing (plug-ins, etc.) so a good compromise is to lower the buffer size for recording then increase it for mixing.

I'd repeat what others have said about a better soundcard (internal or external) probably being a big help too. There are lots of good ones these days with very low latency.

Sounds like your soundcard is the problem.
I use m-audio-audophile soundcard with windows, asio etc, with no probs.
Also would use better studio software, Sonar is good.
I tried that freebee audacity a while back with similar problems.

Reaper is perfectly good software, there should be no problem there if it's configured properly.

Dont know if it's been updated over the years (reaper)
When i tried it i found the midi functions very limited, and it did'nt have any way of editing audio.

Many audio post and music people that I know speak very highly of it, but I've not had the chance to use it myself. Certainly it seems to do audio editing.
Reaper website

But it depends what you are wanting from a DAW I suppose.

Compared to this poem I've made.

Besides, the Unix framework that Mac runs on approaches the power of Linux, if you know how to access it.
