I've had a bit of time off work and resurrected my wildly ambitious idea to re-record Incantations from scratch. Haha. We'll see...

But anyway, I'm starting with the easier parts first, it'll probably take years but here's the first completed part.

Let me know what you think, all (constructive) criticism is gratefully received :)

Nice! I like the general feel and particularly enjoy the drone texture in the background (but then I'm a sucker for drones--ever since I first laid ears on the opening bars of HR). Is it just me, or is the tempo slightly faster than the original? I'll be curious to see how this section will blend into the next (with louder timpani strikes, perhaps?). Anyway, good luck, and have fun with was promises to be a massive, but immensely satisfying, undertaking!

Thanks! :)
Yes it is a bit faster than the original and there's a repeat as well. I did ponder redoing it all at the original speed and I may yet do that. Let's see.

So I've slowed it down to what I think is the original tempo.

What do you think? There's a bit of loose timing here and there I need to redo which has become more apparent at this speed.

To me this sounds better. I've always liked the contrast between the soft introduction to Side IV and the busy vibe section that follows, so slowing down the introduction better serves the purpose of the ensemble. Furthermore, what you've produced so far is lovely, and slowing the tempo gives listeners a little more time to appreciate it. That said, let your inspiration act as your primary guide--not the comments of cloth-eared nincompoops like me!  :)

I think it's better too. And I also love a good drone in the right place! :D

Thanks for your appreciation and feedback, it's very encouraging :)

Hey, this sounds nice. You're making good strides with the project. Since you were asking for feedback earlier, here are two suggestions: try putting a shimmer effect on the strings to see whether that adds more tension to the ensemble; and try crescendoing the arpeggios in each phrase (making them softer at first compared to the current volume setting) to see if that creates a build-up effect. These would need to be subtle, though, as this is piece of music is delicate, and what you have is already very solid. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback! I think you're right about the strings needing to be tremolando in a couple of extra places and I've been working on getting the arpeggios sounding right, sweeping up in volume each time. Will let you know how I get on :)

Hi Stephen - both Part II and Part IV nicely done, it's good to see there's someone else out there mad enough to have a go at covering this masterpiece! I like the way you've captured the "jerkiness" of the synth lead at the very start of Part II (the infamous reverse of the trumpet bit in part I!), and the distant minimalism of the following. Also I like the Hergest Ridge-alike re-instrumentation of that bit where the bass and guitar double (I have to admit it's one of my least favourite bits of the album...so it's a real compliment to say yours sounds better!)

I have bits of Parts I and II scattered all over my hard drive as dusty projects which one day I hope to get back to...watch this space!

Thanks! A little madness helps I think. I'm skirting around the edges of it so far, working on the parts that don't require MO level guitar skills as I don't have any :) Maybe I'll find someone who does when the time comes...

I'm still faffing with the opening of this Part II, it's not quite sounding right but I'll get there. There's also a Part IV finale nearly done but missing a singer... Then I think I'll work on the rest of Part II. And I've got the remainder of Part IV laid out but lots of stuff missing. Why did I start this..? Actually I'm quite enjoying it :D

I hadn't thought about the Hergest Ridge-ness of swapping the guitars for oboe and bassoon but now that you mention it, it makes sense, thanks!

No time like the present to dust off your hard drive and revisit your projects, go for it! I really enjoy your ambient version of the Part IV intro. So far I'm being much more literal with mine but that may well change out of sheer necessity when I get to the harder parts! :)

Happy New Year everyone, I hope all is well!

I'm still working away on my own Incantations when I get time here and there. Here's another bit.

There's a cor anglais in lieu of a singer (for now) but I actually quite like it so let's see, it might stay.

Enjoy (or not) :)

Happy New Year to you too, and thanks for sharing this addition to your project. Overall, I like it very much. My only suggestion would be to try to make the piano sound less dry, or less percussive, as (to my ears) it breaks the ethereal atmosphere you've nicely established with the rest of the instruments. Good luck, and continue having fun with Mike's music!

Thanks for the nice feedback :)

Yes, I had wondered about the piano. It's not as smooth and legato as it ought to be, some of the notes stick out too much here and there. Will refine this over time, or even replace it with something else, dare I say it, electric guitar!

They're known as the piano's "black keys"  :D

Good job, like them both! Love the SH 2000 sound in the Part ! excerpt, what synth did you use? You've nailed the tricky counterpoint in the canon as well...when I did my version I "fudged it" so it sounded about right...but wasn't truly authentic.

Have sent you PM as well.

Your excerpts sound almost exactly like the original recordings ...By casually listening without being told it wasnt a remake, I wouldnt personally automatically know the difference.  Are you SURE it is a remake?
