I'm one of those odd creatures who think that Incantations is perfect as it is, repetitions, nasal vocals and all.

Don't get me wrong, Holger, I'm only playing the "what if" game.  I do love Incantations as it is and often play it all the way through.  But sometimes an abridged version would be a nice alternative.

And Alan's method would certainly be one way of doing it (I was only kidding about the Amarok comparison, Alan! ).

Wasn't pointing at you or anyone in particular, just making a general statement. I don't know, it's just that the thought never even crossed my mind that there might be anything wrong with Incantations or that any changes to it might be desirable. Who knows what it'd be like if I heard the album for the first time now, but as it is, I fell deeply in love with it some twelve years ago, and when you're in love, you don't search for flaws.

Oh my God, Alan, you'd "Amarokise" it!!

Well, to Amarokize it, I'd need to chuck in a heap of steel foundry noises as well. I think it would be more accurate to say that I'd 'Windchime' it.....

But I say again... I've only myself to blame. I just played it to destruction. I doubt if any piece of music could survive the pounding that I gave Incantations, long ago.

I also enjoy Incantations in its entirety... actually I only heard it first a few weeks ago and was shocked at how absolutely blindingly perfect it is. I even love Hiawatha. As long as it is. I can't get enough of Maddy's voice in part II. Consider me mad :)

I wonder if I would react any differently to any of Mikes early albums if I only just heard them for the first time a few weeks ago. While I will never lose enthusiasm for them and I don't think that any of the instrumentals date, I just wonder if I would rate them differently now that I am a more experienced listener, and with so much excellent music to compare them with.

Tracy.

Not if it was edited to be much LONGER... to include the material he eventually dropped off, like "Make Way for the Strange Ones" and the long vocal chant that would have been in the middle of Side 4. I could go for that!

Off topic: does anyone at all recognize a Sleestak avatar?

When I think of editing an item , piece of music etc, I usually think of making it SHORTER, but a   LONGER version of Incantations, I could also go for that   :) .

And Pipe Tune, perhaps.

I'd cut the most repetitive parts in the One (are a lot).
The song of Hiawatha is nice, deserves to be included intact.
The Three and the Four are also delighting, but we could cut the strangest moments that break the rhythm of the piece.

I would leave it as it is. I love the album - repetitive, nasal, Maddy - it's all fab. The long repeated passages have a rather hypnotic quality which I find totally relaxing, unlike some other minimalistic music I have in my collection.

Here is what I would cut:

Part 1: nothing
Part 2: everything except the Song of Hiawatha
Part 3: nothing
Part 4: the beginning waltz

And, just to annoy you all, I would add Guilty! YAY GUILTY!!!!!!! :D  :D  :D

is the waltz the section from the start, until the vibraphones commence?

Yes. It's about a minute or two, if I'm not mistaking. If it were any longer, it would probably put me to sleep.

Sorry about the quote! I made a mistake.

Actually, I like the Exposed version of that part, but...to each his own, I always say.
