The vibes part is too long and repetitive,

Got to agree.  Sometimes it really jangles my nerves....and I usually LOVE vibes.

Part 4 is my favourite!  I love the burst of Guitar around the 8 minute mark!  I've never got into part 3!  Part 1 would be my 2nd favourite and Part 2 is quite good!

Whoa -- I voted part 2 and found myself alone. Am I the only one who actually adores the Hiawatha sequence and doesn't find it too long? And yes, voting in this poll was a bit like voting in a "which of your children do you love most" poll.

The "Hiawatha" section of Incantations is one I have always struggled with, especially in terms of length and lack of development/progression/variety. I don't have any such problem with the other sections.

Part 4 for me. I know the vibes are long and repetitive but then I enjoy many works by Philip Glass (check out 'The Photographer' and 'Dance Nos 1 - 5' if you like this sort of thing) which are even more minimalist.

Until recently I was a Part One kinda guy, but lately I've been wigging out to Part Three.  My favourite sections however are from the other two parts - the opening riff of Part Two is delightful, and the guitar solo after the vibes in Part Four is just stunning.

You are not. I love side two, though I'm less fond of that very first theme. But when the music quietens, I'm home. And then: The Diana, Lushiga, Luna sequence ending with that glorious, triumphant but ominous Lumen giving way to the most hypnothic piece of music ever, the Hiawatha chant. I love Maddy Priors oboe-like voice, I love those marimbas and the sustained strings. This is transcendence, a frozen moment of immense depth that goes on forever. Just like in Borges' Secret Miracle or in Murakami's Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.
I'd like to live by that river.
And I'd die to hear the words those druids whispered in Mr. Oldfields ears.

Do you mean the first song in the CD "Heaven" by the band "Sparks"? Just getting specifics: I'm going to look for this.

Most likely, I did live by that river. I'll have to check the lyrics again.

By the shores of Gitche Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
Stood the wigwam of Nokomis.

Did you, like the other Hiawatha, live there? Seems like it's not a river, but the Lake Superior, its southern shore.

The section you quote, which begins the section on "Incantatations", does refer to Lake Superior.

The section I quote in my SIG, which is not in "Incantations" actually (but it still part of "The Song of Hiawatha"), refers to the Mississippi River, which I used to live on. There is an area of the river valley called "the Hiawatha Valley", named after "The Song of Hiawatha".

I think it's the album called "No. 1 In Heaven", by the band Sparks. They're a great band. Their debut album is one of the most unique things I've ever heard.

If someone can pinpoint the track on the album that sounds like Inc Side 1, I'd like that.

To answer the topic question... Part III! Part III!

The "marching guitar thing" does it for me (don't know how else to describe it, but it's the part between 08:37 and 12:07, and comes in again later, at 15:20). I mean, wow. Just... wow.

Part I, 08:56 to 15:09, also BRILLIANT.
And then there's Part IV, 0:00 to 01:45... <gasp, faint, etc.>

But to get back to the point, I'll have to go with Part III. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and good night.

I have found Incantations the most difficult MO album to get into, I don't particularly get moved by part 1 or 2 although they are nice. Parts 3 and 4 are my favourites but still not as inspiring as Amarok, Ommadawn, Taurus II, Crises etc IMO  :/

You're right - Incantations isn't an "instant" album, but please give it a few more shots.  One day you'll get it, I swear, and then you'll love it.
