Well, I voted for part 1 because it showcases most of the aspects and melodies of the album. An "overture" of sorts. But I like all parts almost equally. Jules Yeah, try recording either of the two themes and reverse them. Pretty cool when you hear it in action. Once you are aware of this though, you can spot the odd rhythmic treatment that the theme to Part 2 has - in my opinion the trumpet theme came first. On the Exposed live version this odd rhythm is slightly 'ironed out' It might possibly be due to its length (and the time taken to hear it in full) that I haven't listened to it as much as Mike's other instrumental albums. I must start an Incantations phase! Back to top

I've never heard it, and I want to very much. If a wasn't so indifferent to incantations I would be quite annoyed. As it is, this isn't my favourite album and I don't really mind, but hearing it would be nice. I'm assuming that Mike played the synth line for Part 2, reversed it and stuck it into the album, and that's what justifies the odd rhythm. Is that right? Or did Mike actually reverse the riff and played along with it? I reversed the beginning of Part 2 and heard it - damn it gave me the creeps - but I couldn't notice whether the synth sound itself was reversed or not. Sure there is reverb, but the reverb could have been added after the recording was reversed, right? I knew about it from another MO site that had an excerpt of the trumpet from Part 1 backwards To me the Roland SH-2000 (?) sounds like it was played the right way round. I think Mike had a clear idea of what the rhythm was meant to sound like in the studio recording. On Exposed, Tim Cross or Pete Lemer might have had to work off a tricky transcription of this. If Mike just showed them how to do it, or they didn't listen to the record enough they might have forgotten about the rhythmic irregularities. Generally, as it was a live atmosphere there is less impetus to be accurate with small points like rhythm. Back to top

The best parts being the flute-strings run at the beginning, the short electronic part just before the percussion that starts "Diana, luna...", and the flute-strings run at the end. No one else seems to like this last part. I don't think it's the best side, maybe the worst along with side two... I actually prefer side two. The vibes part is too long and repetitive, and the end is nice, but not by far the best section from Incantations. They're all from the other sides, specially 1 and 3. I like the beginning, but it's too short, I'de like the beginning being longer and the vibes part being shorter. The quick part after the vibes is very nice tho'.
