David Mar Group: Members Posts: 457 Joined: Oct. 2001 Posted: Oct. 03 2005, 05:40 If you compare his recent work to his earlier work - he said in an interview around the time of TB2 that his earlier work didn't have a groove, and that perhaps during the '80's he'd learnt how. It's a swing to the feel of the track, rather than playing like a machine - I mean, early drum machines played on the beat the whole time, but now, today's technology allows you to change the beat slightly so it has more of a swing or feel, rather than play a soulless, regimented beat which is exactly on time, every single beat, which sounds mechanical and cold. Free are a good example of a band who play with a groove, or swing. Back to top

There's a bit of confusion surround the concept of "groove". There are also "grooves" - sampled drum loops that's (sometimes very) slightly out of synch with the exact tempo. Mike used "grooves" for the first time on TSODE (which is why it sounds even more like Enigma). Isn't that what he means? I've never heard Mike playing off the beat in any away since 1975 (the african drum parts from Ommadawn actually grooves in the traditional way). Thinking early work here: I think groove is possibly one of the primary differences between his music and alot of 'prog' of the 70s. Back to top
