I sort of can play it but had to slow it right down in Cubase and listen to every note and match it. To me it's one of those spontaneous bursts he had when recording it but always hard to reproduce. For years I have always wanted to play it for a challenge but too afraid to try. Still can't do it all in one smooth flow but can find most of the notes. The Amarok solo in E minor is even harder but similar. Some smart alec onYoutube can do it.

It's a question of if you put the time and effort in but I would rather write my own stuff :-)

It's easy... you just jump on string 2 and then on. When you appear on string 2 you do a legato with frets 3-5-7 7-5-3 and then 2-3-5-5-3-2.

By the time you turn up ascending you start up with a glissando from fret 7 to 9 on the 4th string, and then on.

Try it and see if you can.

He plays it almost perfectly in this video (Notice Maggie Reilly rolling around on the floor?). Much better than the Montreux performance. I notice that this section was excluded from the NOTP performance... which does make me wonder...

I would really like to see what was this video? Any other links?

I can play it on piano. And believe me, its much harder on piano than on guitar. Pianists can't do pull-offs, hammer-ons, and all the other trickery guitarists use to play stuff like that run.

I found it amusing that so many people in this thread posted about how good they are, without offering any proof to back it up. So here I'm posting a very old recording that I did (the sound quality and playing is much lower than on my recent recording of Taurus II) of Ommadawn. You'll find some parts totally different than the original version, but since Mike often did this live (1981 version for example) I took the initiative to arrange a medley of parts 1 and 2. There are lots of mistakes; the grand piano was recorded live months before I did the other overdubs. Anyway, here it is:
