There are many great 'psychadelic pop' artists who would definitely come under the heading of hippy. I can only think of one off the top of my head, The Electric Hippies, remember them, not that long ago actually, from the 90's, (they had a hit with Greedy People, love it) but I saw several of them listed in the book '1001 albums you must hear before you die'. Added one more this week, Sigur Ross' debut album, I have 55 now, only 946 to go!

Do you mean Jimmy Buffett, the Margaritaville guy? http://www.buffettnews.com/ Actually, he hangs out not far from here with friends, sometimes, when he's not waistin' away in Margaritaville.

Do you think any of MO's music could have been labeled hippie music? like in the 70s? (or 80's for some people....)

All I can ask is "what is hippie music?"

Music that sounds good when you're on shrooms, acid, ganja, and xtc. Often has a political message against the extablishment, for freedom, peace, and love. Often with an acoustic guitar and hand drums.

I wouldnt class Mikes music as Hippy... More Electro
- Folk ... I guess anything would sound good if you
were stoned lol... Ive got a 70s Dutch Lp .. The Lead
Singer deff is High on that one!! Sounds like it was
recorded in one of there coffee Shops.. Naa Mikes Music
is to tight for it to be classed as Hippy... Even though
it might sound even more brlliant if you were stoned lol. ;)

I was a hippie in the 60's (and maybe still am in my heart) and did all the hippie things and wore all the hippie clothes and thought all the hippie thoughts.

From my perspective, it's mostly the lyrics that make hippie music - those that are relevant to the hippie attitude and lifestyle or the feeling you get after having used psychedelic drugs.  A few examples:

Incense and Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock

White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane

Eight Miles High - The Byrds

Give Peace A Chance - John Lennon

Listen to Polyphonic Spree if you want to hear current hippie music.

yeah you know in 35 years we'll at ourselves as we are now and we"ll say we looked like retro-ish whta I mean is that in 60's-70's it wouldn't have been the word hippie

Everyone's interpretation is different, and everyone has a right to that opinion. There is no "right" one, I am adding this post to communicate my thoughts to share them with like-minded souls who will be able to comment in good nature.

I would not call Jethro Tull modern, myself.

I saw Jethro Tull in concert when I was a hippie.  They played Cole Field House at the University of Maryland (home of the terps).  I was very stoned.  I remember Ian Anderson was wearing a long, flowing cape.  The whole show just seems kind of hazy to me now...yes, more like a "purple haze".
