Quote (Sir Mustapha @ Dec. 13 2003, 18:57)
Indeed! Gimme Back is even more reggae than In High Places, with its unbroken rhythm and even that "chuck-chuck" guitar popping in now and then. I find it nice Mike has an interest in Reggae/African/God-knows-what rhythms. It seems Europe doesn't have only Ian Andersons. :D

I am glad someone else has noticed Mikes reggae influences. I always thought In High Places had a reggae beat, along with Gimme Back. Yep, Mike is no Bob Marley, but then Bob Marley was never a Mike Oldfield.

As for the vocalists who Mike could have used for In High Places..... Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) and Fish (Marillion)

There's a section in Ommadawn (pt1) at 4:26 with a reggae-ish backbeat guitar.

and while we're at it, don't forget 42:37 of Amarok. It sounds especially reggae-like towards the end of this section when the Vox organ comes in

I'm not a Jon Anderson fan and, until recently, I usually skipped "In High Places". Now, after really listening to it several times, I think it's brilliant. I've even added it to my 'Late Night' playlist. :)

I think it's odd, although I don't really like Anderson's voice, this song has become one of my favourite MO songs, but comes second to Moonlight Shadow and Crime of Passion. I think it's got a lovely, heavenly feel to it, and always reminds me of my favourite TV Show, Firefly.

Interestingly, I'm not a big fan of Jon's voice usually, but on IHP I feel it just fits perfectly.

Talking about Mike's reggae influences, of course we must not forget In The Pool.

I think I'm a bit too biased here, I just love Jon and his voice too much! I love Shine as well! :D :D

A new ad for Kia features a snippet from "In High Places". I wonder if this ad is confined to Australia or world-wide. Interesting to speculate why Mike (and Jon Anderson) "sold out" here...
