Hey everyone, Ive just moved house and ive been given the garge to convert into a studio, now ive gotten all the soundproofing things together, now i need to get my Monitors sorted!

Ive been given nice HiFi speakers that are HUGE snf ive just gotten an old DJ's Amplifier todrive them, however, can i ask, youknow the red and black wires from a HI fi, the ones that you put in a hole and close a lid over them? can i solder a 1/4 inch jack to that and plug it into  my amplifier? or would this blow em?

Go raibh maith ágat!

:D

That depends upon where you plug it into and what type of 1/4 jack you are using. To be honest it sounds like your describing a pre-amp, not a power amp. A poweramp should have the connections for normal speakers (i.e. banana plugs, etc). If this is the case you may need to buy two power blocks to route the signal through.

If your intent on using 1/4 inches, though, the thing you're gonna have to look out for is the type of 1/4 inch. I'm sure you know this but the number of black lines across the top of the connector denotes the number of channels, so 1 black line is mono and 2 black lines is stereo. Let me make this perfectly clear....

IF you try to solder any connection at all, it will sound SHITE. I know, because I've done it. What you can do if you don't have the right connections is to go to your local hifi electronics specialist and have them make a cable up for you (I had some 1/4 in mono to RCA's made up, theyre brill). It may just be possible that you have the wrong type of amplifier for what your trying to achieve here. It definately requires more research though, and without seeing the connections 1st hand I can't give you any more advice than that.

helo arron!! im in school right now and as you know ive no internet at home to contact you otherwise! youd be the first id ask!

yeah, this is a really high powered amp, not sure what make/model etc, but all i know is that its two 1/4 inch jack in and out, i.e stereo, therefore i only need two one banded jacks, in mono, as ive two ins and outs, im ok for outputting sound from the soundcard to the amp, but not so sure as to how to output from the amp to these really good speakers - their only drawback being that they are big HiFi ones, as i above mentioned, but hey, theyre being given to me for free!

can i get like, an amplifier wich has the same connections as i above mentioned exist on the monitors?

Erm... no. Frankly they sound like a specialist make job to me. I have someone in Derby that can make them for you if you cannot find anyone there, get in touch if you need me to arrange something.

Your after two 1/4 in mono to speaker wire connections basically, and thats... thats... well i've never seen those before lets put it that way.

well mine cost £25 i think... but they were double terminated. The deciding factor is going to be the length of cable required...?

hmmmm, well you see, i have right now, the correct cable needed, about 40-50 cms in length, two of them,

I also have two 1/4 inch mono jacks, you know, ones that i bought of ebay, brand new and ready tobe soldered

Think that somewhere sould do the rest of the work? or should i buyit all from scratch from the person who does it?

Yeah I'd take the cable and jacks to a guy in Belfast. He'll have a special gas soldering iron that will not oxidise the copper, which is what creates a crappy connection (and therefore bad sound). Give that a try, and if you need to, I can arrange an alternative.
