Just been listening to it, Alan - beautiful and truly stirring.  OK, I'm a convert!

:)

Jules

Delighted! The downside, however, is that you'll now spend the rest of your life trying other examples of his work hoping to find something as good or better, but not quite managing it!

But seriously, if this has got to you, it's worth trying his 5th symphony if you want something longer. If you want to stick with shorter pieces, Elgar's 'Introduction and Allegro for Strings' has very much the same kind of feel to it, and is also easy to find.

I'll be interested to see if you enjoy Hergest Ridge even more, now.....

I love Hergest Ridge (both the album and the place) :D .  I think playing the album whilst walking up The Ridge has made the album more atmospheric.  Sitting at home playing it just wasn't the same, I can look at photos of The Ridge, but photos don't really do The Ridge justice.  Hergest Ridge is a place you have to go and see for yourself.  It's the most beautiful amazing and inspiring scenery I've ever seen   :)  :D.

If there is such a thing as an orgasmic piece of music then this is it.

Actually Ommadawn would get my vote as the 'orgasmic' MO album.

Hehehe, well HR is more romanitc, another discussion was what music to use when making love (if any) Hergest ridge 'came out on top' so surely that is the orgasmic album  ;)

Yes, I like it, without any doubt.

I found it superior to TB in terms of arrangement and "maturity". Probably TB is more "genius", but HR is more "self conscious".

Not only do I like it, it is definitely in my Top 5 Albums ever. I can't see how anyone can dislike it. There are so many emotional peaks that this album reaches that it can bring tears to the eyes. There may only be 6 main tunes, but each one brings something different. The first section is a lovely introduction into a world of pure tranquility, and it ends with a wonderful peak of happiness. Then, we cannot forget that astonishing "electronic thunderstorm" at the end of Part 2, as it is just a pure outlet of fury and rage that seems to be held back throughout the whole piece. It is just sheer genius.

After about six listenings, I'm starting to really love Hergest Ridge.

ETA

I'm a little embarrassed to ask, but is it pronounced 'her guest' or 'her jest'?

I've always pronounced it as it's  spelt Hergest, but I understand that locals pronounce it Hargest.

I pronounce it "Her-jest" Ridge.

This is because that's how Mike pronounces it at the end of "On Horseback":

I loved HR after the first time, but the feeling it gave me started to deepen after every listening, and I had the closest thing I've ever had to an out-of-church religious experience when I listened to it full volume after a truly horrendous day.

There's some wonderful moments in it, and Iksion's right about the mind-blowing electric guitars at about 11 minutes in to Part 2.

My favourite part other than that would have to be the almost heavenly choir at the end of Part 1, after all the music has built up to this climax, before it beconmes quite and closes with the flutes. The oboes in Part 1 are also a pleasure to listen to.

I, too, pronounced it as "her jest", but I couldn't figure out if that was how it was said in "On Horseback" or not. *sigh* I really need to invest in a good home sound system.

Yep indeed  :)  :D .

The only thin is he lives about 60 miles away from me , I know it isn't far, but it's not the distance so much that's the problem, just he's working many hours to get straight, as  I will be if I can find work.  Oh well togehter we can overcome obstacles.

I kind of like Hergest Ridge...but mostly the second half.
It sounds like there's more instruments or things going on there.  :)
Well...the sections on the vinyl side 1 with sounds of a tubular bell are always special moments for me.

I think it's 'ur-guest', actually. At least, that's how I've heard it being pronounced by an Irishman I talked to, and it's also how I hear what Mike says on 'On Horseback'.

When we were at the Beacon, the former owner corrected my pronounciation (er, because IIR, I had asked him). Apparently those in the area pronounce it "Har-guest."

Of the 3   TB1  Hergest & Ommadawn     The 1st 3 Albums Ive got to say on Plays Alone    Hergest gets the Vote from me..
Maybe cause it sticks in the Head more than the others.. Im not sure.. Its got a bit of whimsy to it with the Organ playing and all out assault with the "Storm" section.. It makes it a great Listen..Dont think ill ever get bored with this album whatever mood Im in ..I might go and have a Walk over the Ridge soon only a hour from my House !!  :D
