Mike used to use a Mk1 Mesa/Boogie for his distorted sound, starting in the late 70s.

Earlier on, he used distortion from a number of different studio devices (tape recorders, mic preamps and also a little Vox Escort amp), run through a chain of equalisers and limiters, sometimes ending in a Fender Twin Reverb. He used the Twin later in his career for clean sounds.

More recently, he's used effects units like the Roland GP-8 for his sounds; he plugs that direct into the mixing desk, both in the studio and live. He's also used a Boss GT-6 for that. His clean Strat sound involves going through some input modules from The Manor's desk. He's used software plugins for his sounds too (like Line 6's Amp Farm).

So...if you want an amp for sounding like Mike's most recent electric playing, you might find that a good guitar effects unit (like a Boss GT-8 or 10 or Line 6 Pod XT or X3 Live, or whichever one you feel you can work with best) together with a powered PA speaker is the best thing. I bet it's what Mike would do if there wasn't already a PA to plug into.

A lot depends on how much you want to spend, of course...

i record my guitar with a mac and logic pro software,
first i process the signal with boss gp20 and boss bd-2 but the results are not so good.
I'm looking for the sound of " let there be light" "crime of passion" "women of ireland" and the solo of "no mans land reprise".
