At the start of Guilty there is a very rythmic,powerfull sounding backing sequence that must be programmed as it sounds so precise.Does anyone know what it is,synth,sequencer etc??? as I cant identify it.I wouldn't have thought that kind of sound was around back in 1979 so I would be interested to know what it is. :cool:

To me it sounds very like an A.R.P. synth with a xylophone superimposed over it. But maybe Korgscrew knows more than me... Where are you, Richard? :)

As a quick answer, I think it's a synth arpeggiator. Don't know about an ARP, though...details may come later ;)

I've just checked 'Guilty' on the Knebworth video - though there's not really much to be seen, there's a short sequence in the beginning showing the keyboard man (who's that - the guy with the tall hat - btw.?) playing the main Guilty synth riff purely by hand, on something that might be an ARP, judging from memory of the video and the images at the synthmuseum.

My guess would be also ARP...or maybe any other synth with arpegiator function :-S

You mean the very first part, that stops the audience?

If the responses are referring to his ARP string ensemble: I don't think that one has an arpeggiator. The string ensemble in my 2000GT organ has one, but it sounds totally different and isn't programmable.  

I think this is a programmed arpeggiator loop, as it is transposed during playback.  I don't know from which instrument, but I doubt it is from the ARP (solina/eminent) string ensemble. Although there are many variants on that one and they all sound different, I haven't heard any sound like that and I'm not aware of programmable arpeggiators on any.  My vote goes to a synthesizer with programmable arpeggiator/sequencer, but I wouldn't know which one. I haven't seen footage of the concerts except for the ones in the LP (I'll check on that one :)).

The sequence on "Guilty" was one of my favourite MO questions but having watched the "Exposed" DVD closely seems to have answered that one. I'm now pretty sure that the sound is from the ARP 2600 (not the String-Ensemble - that's a completely different machine which is unable to produce sounds like that) which has been hooked up to an EMS Universal Sequencer. Just check the scenes on "Exposed" that show Pete Lemer from the right side of the piano -> the black "thing" on the floor next to Pete is definitely an ARP 2600 and the EMS sequencer sits on the piano, together with the Roland SH-2000 synth.

That makes sense: the sequencer steering the arp 2600.
