I gave 'The Millennium Bell' a bit of a hammering on Amazon... I called it trite, whimsical, and unremarkable. Perhaps I was a bit extreme. Days later, I find myself humming long passages and wanted to get home to listen to it again. It's not a bad Oldfield album. But I stand by my initial assessment, and here's why:

An album by Mike called 'The Millennium Bell' ought to be the most daring, epic, and groundbreaking work he's ever done, while still being full of great melody. It should be Amarok's elder brother. Instead, it's just too shallow. Fine music to chill to, an album he should be pleased with - but no more than that.

Not the milestone in his career he was maybe hoping for, then. And I sincerely hope it's not the last 'proper' album he does. Come on, Mike, there's another masterpiece in you somewhere.
