Music, the ancient language... Group: Musicians Posts: 407 Joined: Jan. 2003 Posted: Jan. 04 2003, 11:29 It appears that almost every Oldfieldfan has his own music on-line. I'll join your group. But I have to warn you, it isn't easy-listening-music. It's quite agressive music, based on neo-expressionistic classical music, mixed with dance/techno. You can listen it on http://users.skynet.be/superluys/Frustration.mp3. It's based upon a nightmare of mine, in whitch I kill someone, and then flee while being chased. Eventually sorrow destroys me. Normally I compose in classical style (just with paper and pencil, not with fruityloops), but Mike inspired me to extend my horizon. He mixed rock with dance, so I tried classical with dance. I hear the dance type structure, but the overall result is definitely somewhere different...it reminds me of a few other contemporary electronic pieces which I've heard, perhaps even Mike Oldfield's electronic music for The Killing Fields. It's certainly quite a sinister sounding affair. And as for that tune (forgive my ignorance here, its name escapes me right now...if I ever knew it in the first place)...I don't suppose you're dressed as a clown in this dream? . Of course, clowns can be very sinister to some people (the killer with a painted-on smile...now there's the makings of a story in that, though I bet it's been done before). I always find it interesting to try different ways of working, the results can often be unexpected, and it's always worth trying as a way of starting out in a new direction... I'd be interested to hear what your other work is like! Back to top

My first reaction was: the track is not nice, but Music, the ancient language...  is pretty good. I find it too dark and sinister to be enjoyable, maybe it would work better with pictures or a movie. Alone, it lets you imagine your own pictures and all the worst nightmares. I hope you'll post other tunes! Back to top

I'm thinking about re-composing (quite 'Oldfieldish', isn't it?) my earlier compositions with fruityloops (I'm starting to like that program! ). Quite a challenge though, composing classical music with a techno-program. After my exams, I think I'm going to re-compose a string quartet I wrote once. (I took part in a composing contest with it, but it was to complicated to be played with only 4 instruments  ) As soon as it is finished (or something else, if I change my mind), i'll post it here.
