it may have been a firmware issue with your player.

I love both formats, and I would say it's a firmware issue. I had a Pioneer DVD / DVD-A / SACD Player which refused to play the MLP Losses audio from my Simple Minds
DVD-Audio. It took so long to sort out the firmware issue I ended getting a new player from Pioneer with 4 free DVD-A discs.

If the discs have an 'Advanced Resolution' logo on them somewhere, that would confirm they are DVD-A discs, and not just conventional DVD's with 5.1 or DTS surround tracks.

DVD-A

In my opinion, Universal made a grotty mess of the whole reissue.  From the track listing, to the availability of the signed copies, to the dubious bell-ringing event, not to mention the release date itself.. it's all starting to take on the faint whiff of tricky-dicky marketing.  I don't think my expectations were unrealistically high, as I would have had a far more generous opinion (and wallet) if any of the above issues were done right.

As an enthusiast of MO's music (and that's all that should matter, anyway), it really came down to just one factor for me:  No "Exorcist" remix (OR it's accompanying B-side) + no "Froggy Went A-Courting = no money coming out of my pocket.

Deluxe editions?  What a load of bollocks.  Torrents, here I come.

Again, just my opinion.

I found it very interesting that on the promo pictured, "MO's Single" was listed at a 3:56 duration, while the actual track released in 1974 is 4:36 (give or take a few seconds).

Jeez-Louise, did these prats get anything right?

Brace yourself Mona Lisa... yer gettin' a nose job.

No, they got nothing right at all. It all sucks and get this - they're going to do the same to all Mike's other albums, over a period of what may be several years...and it's all going to be just as crap as this, so you might as well save yourself the torture and just leave now.

@ Korgscrew.

Surely you're not suggesting that a big, multinational corporation like Universal Music cannot bear up under honest, critical scrutiny from the people that helped put one of their clients in the position he currently enjoys?

Surely not.

That seems like a useful and legitimate concern to me - and needs flagging up.

Yes, indeed. Putting it as a question "is this a typo, have they shortened it, or has this been made from a different tape from the V2001 release?" might have elicited a different reaction...

It wouldn't be the first time a typo has been made on a promo of that nature (or even on a release version...), but equally, the remix might really be a different length. I don't know the answer, but I can ask if people are interested - we do have a reasonable relationship with the people who are running the project, so we can always try to get information if people here want it...or we can just call them prats and not bother. The latter involves far less work.

Prats? - yes, some genuine exasperation going on I guess - nothing wrong with a bit of that. I recall you saying something a bit stronger yourself this week Korgscrew  :p

Keep Cool Y'all :D

I for one am looking forward to Saturday and up for some bell ringing

@ bob: actually there's one bid - mine. I put in 12 pounds. Not bad, I think. :)

@ Richard/Korgscrew: as I'm close to actually buying the item (unless someone outbids me, which is not unlikely) I would be interested about whether this a typo or not. I do know that typos are all over the place... the back cover of my copy of Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind CD lists "The Trooper" as having a duration of 3'56'', when the actual song is 4'12''. And it's the remastered edition. :D

whoever is lucky (=rich enough) to get that promo, they can listen full album before actual release.

i guess that preorders will be shipped monday 8th so UK customers will receive them 9th-> and like me i have to wait 3-5 days so i expect it by end of that week.

It is not a typo, it lasts 3:56!

@ Nacho: what piece are you referring to? "M.O.'s Single" or "The Trooper" ? The album version of the latter song lasts for 4 minutes and 12 seconds. It's also like that on the vinyl edition of Piece of Mind which I also have, but which doesn't list song durations.

I still think it's a shame they didn't include Froggy-went-a-courting in the set! It could have been a great oppertunity for this release. Oh well...

It could be included with Hergest Ridge. There isn't a lot of extras of 1974 to be included in a future release...

@ Nacho: the version of "M.O.'s Single" I have on the Singles & Rarities FLAC compilation is 4'36''. How do you know that the mix on the promo is actually 3'56''? Have you actually got the promo? If so, lucky you!!
