There is now other copy from promo in ebay that is auctioned so we can see how high it goes in normal auction ;)

Unless someone make them private offer and seller take item off from auction (like week ago when amarok x-trax was taken off from listings)

Woooh! The starting bid is already for £25. I don't think I shall be chipping in on this one  ;)

Thanks for the pics Tati! Very nice!

But how does the track on this promo sound like? Is it the new "Bahamas" mix or just the old TB mix?

If it's the "Original Theme from The Exorcist" it's probably the horrible (IMHO) collage of excerpts of Part 1 (from the 1973 mix), starting and ending with the piano theme, which was released on 45 RPM together with the film. At 3'17'' it doesn't even sound like it's the common single edit. :)

There's one of these promo things with only 2 hours left to run on eBay at the moment. It's currently at £53. Yikes!  :O

You can listen to a few seconds of Mike Oldfield's Single from the 2009 Tubular Bells Edition. I have to check my vinyl single, but it seems some new guitars have been added to the mix, or they have been enhanced.

I may be wrong, but to my ears the excerpt sounds like it's taken from an almost completely re-recorded version of the piece, which features only a few elements from the original version - maybe only the oboe, and I can't even be 100% sure that the oboe wasn't re-recorded as well. :D The electric guitar on the right channel is very definitely a 2009 addition IMHO - it's the typical muted sound of a PRS, which has become common in Mike's output only from the late Eighties (maybe from Amarok onwards, I don't remember it before that). Obviously Mike didn't have a PRS in 1973. :p

A couple of things:

1) Although it says "DVD AUDIO" I've seen plenty of discs labelled as "DVD AUDIO" that aren't actually DVD-Audio discs, so do we know whether or not this is some lossy Dolby or dts 5.1 mix, or is it a proper LOSSLESS MLP 5.1 mix? If the latter, is it 24/48, 24/44.1, 24/88.2 or 24/96? It's a shame they're not doing a DSD 5.1 mix on an SACD, I find overall more pleasing SACD discs in my collection than there are DVD-Audio discs.

2) The quality of the "Back in Black" series vinyl releases has been underwhelming to say the least. It appears that either no-one is checking the master that's being sent for pressing after one or two runs, or they are just using crappy recycled vinyl. Listening to the Simply Vinyl release of Ommadawn is wonderful, no pops, no vinyl noise, even in quieter passages the only way you can tell you're listening to vinyl is by how incredibly open and real the soundstage is compared to the CD. Does anyone know if this vinyl is being pressed in the UK or in the USA. I'm hoping it's the UK. Comparing the '97 Virgin UK (Hut) release of The Verve's "Urban Hymns" with the recent Capitol US re-issue last year, the UK one is so much more pleasant. The US version can't clean up the sound to save its own life. I've had similar experiences with other Capitol and Universal pressings recently.

Most DVD-Audio discs are all lossy. DTS is obviously the closest approximation to a lossless mix, but it's not lossless. :) The reason is that the vast majority of people who own a DVD player have got a DVD-Video player, which doesn't accept a DVD-Audio unless there are some images in it together with the music. And I think that having images (even stills) together with the music doesn't allow the music to be in a lossless format because it wouldn't be played (or read) properly by ordinary DVD-Video players. However, most of the DVD players in today's PCs do read lossless streams on DVD-Audio discs. So, if you've got your PC hooked up to a nice 5.1 system, you're on the roll. :)

That's incorrect - DVD-Audio discs are lossless, they contain information in the AUDIO_TS folder which is either PCM or MLP surround and stereo mixes. All lossy mixes (dts/Dolby) reside in the VIDEO_TS folder. If a disc has the DVD-Audio logo on it, then it contains a DVD-Audio mix which is lossless, never lossy. MLP is lossless encoding.

You've misunderstood my question and absolutely no offense intended here but I don't think you understand how DVD-Audio discs work either.

All DVD-Video players will accept DVD-Audio discs because they all include a VIDEO_TS folder with any additional video footage and any lossy mutli-channel mixes of the disc you're buying. It doesn't matter whether or not there are images in with the music, the AUDIO_TS folder is never accessed by a DVD-Video player, it only reads what's in the VIDEO_TS folder.

A DVD-Audio player can access the AUDIO_TS folder, can play the LOSSLESS MLP 5.1 mixes and can also play still images at the same time, it is completely lossless, just like zipping up a word document, just like .flac or .shn encoding. Because the two folders are separate, the DVD-Audio player can read both while the DVD-Video player is perfectly happy playing you the dts or Dolby mutli-channel tracks from the VIDEO_TS folder (lossy) and can play video at the same time. The two are totally separate.

I have a Pioneer Elite DV-48 SACD/DVD-A player hooked up through HDMI to an Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver, because I wanted one with DAC's that allowed for DSD>Analog conversion without hitting the PCM realm. My speaker set-up is as follows:

F - Paradigm Monitor 11v5
C - Paradigm Monitor CC-370v4
R - Paradigm Monitor 11v4
S - Paradigm Servo 15v2

The TB2003 sounds fantastic sonically, although I rarely listen to it simply because the surround mix is terrible as pertains to the panning effects. It sounds like someone just discovered the panning knobs and wanted to twiddle them all day, fnarr, fnarr.

I hope that the new 5.1 mix is done concentrating on the music, rather than the surround effects. The TB2003 is enough to make you vomit.

Anyway, I'm not concerned with whether or not I can acheive playback, I'm concerned with what bit depth and sampling rate the 5.1 mix is going to be and whether it will be an actual DVD-Audio discs (MLP = lossless) or just a DVD-Video disc with audio on it (dts/Dolby = lossy).

:)

Oh and I also have a Goldring GR-2 turntable with the 1012GX cartridge and a Parasound pre-amp, which is why I'm interested in getting the vinyl too...but I think I might end up looking for an NM copy of the original pressing.

Hopefully some of the other albums might get the treatment like this? I'd love to get Ommadawn, HR, Incantations, etc., in lossless multi-channel...better yet 24/192 5.1 on Blu-ray Disc, complete with moving pictures instead of still images. Blu-ray is where it's at for the future of HD audio.

@ Dobyblue: no offence at all, I'm just not very good at techincal matters. I only know that I originally bought Iron Maiden's Dance of Death album on DVD-Audio because I was curious to hear how would Maiden sound when mixed in 5.1, and how good Kevin Shirley (and Steve Harris?) had been at it. :) But my DVD-Video player wouldn't play it, while my PC drive did. Maybe it was because there was no VIDEO_TS folder in it? I don't know. Next day I went back to the record shop and bought the CD. I still have the DVD-Audio, tho'. ;)

I have some doubts about the fact that the new release will be on DVD-Audio only, because there may be people who have got players like mine which can't play DVD-Audio only discs. If it was in the same format as the TB2003 DVD, i.e. hybrid, well, that would be just perfect. For me. :)

I've got roughly 60 SACD's and 40 DVD-Audio discs and I've never come across one that didn't have a DVD-Video section on it. All DVD's require a DVD-Video folder as far as I know, I'm not sure why your DVD player didn't like it, but it may have been a firmware issue with your player.

I had a Pioneer DV-45 Elite before upgrading to the 48. The 45 didn't have HDMI support and when I upgraded my receiver to start getting Blu-ray's audio goodness I also upgraded my SACD/DVD-A player so I could get full digital connection there with HDMI also. My DV-45 player would not load my Queensryche Empire disc at all. I had to play it in my PS2 in order to listen to the Dolby Digital mix, blech! Finally when I got the DV-48 player I was able to listen to the lossless DVD-Audio layer. I called Pioneer and they said I could send the DV-45 in for a firmware upgrade which might help with disc compliance, but I didn't want to go without my player for 3~4 weeks and I think it's crap they couldn't send me a disc to do it myself.

I will be very happy if it contains proper 24/96 lossless MLP like the TB2003 disc, but it's a shame it's not coming with SACD as that is easily the more popular hirez format.

For the Maiden disc, if you look on the back it should say what formats it has on it. If it has any Dolby or dts 5.1 mixes then it contains a VIDEO_TS folder and probably just doesn't like your DVD player.

I agree with Tubularman about the new version of the single ..I've always loved the old version and this sample is great BUT TOO SHORT !

I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR THE REST !

This should be the proper promo  rather than the re-done ? US edit single !
