Hi! I have a Hergest Ridge CD, Virgin issue, probably from the late '90s / early 2000s, which to my ears sounds completely "wrong": i.e. nothing like the vinyl album I got in the early '90s.

The whole record is rather light on bass, but even more so in the first part, where it's practically absent. In contrast, I remember my vinyl LP, where the bass was clearly audible a few minutes after the beginning. You know the whole part where the bass plays a long note, then the same note with harmonics? I remember hearing that very well on the LP, while it's almost unhearable on the CD.

Do you think I've got a defective copy, or is it just one of the regular horrible jobs Virgin used to do on Mike's CDs ?

P.S.: I only discovered this quirk recently because I had actually forgotten I had bought the CD!    All this time I've been listening to a CD I had recorded from my own vinyl copy.

Are you sure this isn't so on all versions of that remaster (and any remaster which has ever been released up until the 2010 one). Mike remixed the original album on the compilation album entitled 'Boxed' and used that version for every single remaster excluding the 2010 version.

I haven't heard the boxed version of part 1 and 2 as I bought the original vinyl in 1987 (circa.) and then just now bought 2010.

But then again, it could be some sort of defect, but I wouldn't know.

Ridge Van Hergest: have you listened to the 2010 version? I'm not keen at all on the bassline getting ambushed (at 12.12) by the bango. The bassline is what makes it for me, and is best when it's upfront and untainted.

wiga: I haven't heard the 2010 version yet, so I can't comment. But the bass definitely needs to be there, or I'd rather listen to my dusty old LP.

As for my CD, according to everything I've read, it would be supposed to contain the same "Boxed" mix that reportedly was on my vinyl record, but that clearly isn't the case.

Incantations: I really wonder if it's the same on every Virgin CD or if I have a rare defective item. If it was a mistake from Virgin, I would expect that at least one "run" of CDs ended up in the stores before it was discovered and fixed, it can't be just one copy.

OK, after a direct A/B comparison with my old CD-from-vinyl, I can say without a doubt that:

1. there's something very wrong with the newer CD; this can't just be a different mix, it's a definite technical screw-up;

2. it's not unique and probably not even rare, since iTunes finds the title of the newer CD at the online CD database.

Moral of the story: I am NEVER going to buy anything from Virgin again. I can't believe they can put out cr@p jobs like this one (and others that I have) and get away with it !! :(

Anyway, I'd still like to hear from other owners to compare experiences.

A Hergest Ridge CD with no bass - I can't imagine. Just to be left with 'continuous organ drone, green hills and sheep.' That's very sad.

Bad bad Virgin :(

Good thing that didn't happen to some cd with a secret track that follows like 10 minutes silence.  ;)

So is this definitely not the case of someone familiar with the vinyl mix encountering the Boxed mix for the first time?

I don't know for sure, but I bought the LP in the early 90's, so it should definitely feature the "Boxed" mix.

Is the bass in the original mix much more prominent than in the "Boxed" mix?

@ RVH: if you bought an used vinyl, it's got a very good chance of containing the original mix. If you bought it new (i.e. sealed), it's got a good chance of containing the Boxed mix. :) In the original mix, the bass is most definitely there. It hasn't got all the emphasis it has in the made-for-subwoofer-equipped-5.1-systems 2010 mix :D, but it's there.

It definitely was a new LP, so it must have the "Boxed" mix on it.

In the original mix, the bass is most definitely there.

That excludes the possibility that my CD contains the oldest mix. But, as I said, I'm sure this is a technical flaw, because no mix could ever sound so flunked up intentionally. :/
The bass is the biggest difference, but there's much more. For example, you can hear the trumpet's reverb, but just a little of the instrument's sound. On the LP it's the reverse. Some guitars are ridiculously upfront, whereas on the LP they were more balanced. The tubular bells at the end of part 1 sound "empty", not so on vinyl.

There's a lot of stuff that just sounds totally screwed up on the CD. :(

As mentioned in an alternate universe, Thanx for the HB's M and W.

(so glad that is The Moon and not Your Moon, M.)   :O

Ridge , youve got the boxed mix on cd .

Its not wrong its correct.

The Boxed version mixed out the bass, trumpets and snare drum .

Its what Mike wanted , and now in 2010 we have what we wanted , a cd of the original mix !!!!

... which, on the 2010 release, is actually not the original 1974 vinyl mix. :)

The Boxed version mixed out the bass, trumpets and snare drum .

It did not mix out the bass - the bass is very prominent.
