I'm rather new to playing electric guitar; so this maybe totally obvious to someone who's experienced. I am learning to play Outcast and have the sheet music for it. Everything is fine except for the fast
BBBB D BBB CCCC E CCC DDDD F DDD EEEE G# EEE... progression (@ 92 bpm)
I tried just striking the strings as fast as I could go, but that becomes tiresome quickly. Then I decided to watch Mike play this section on the TB3 Horse guard Concert on tape. I've seen it at least 20 times in slow motion and at regular speed. Mike moves his wrist at half the speed it takes to strike the string on each note. He might be hitting two strings. I also noticed that he uses interesting left hand positions. They appear to be chord like with the D string being bent down!? Ultimately, his guitar might be tuned to play the song easier, but I don't think so. I just can't see how half the picking effortinto something that fast. On the other hand, the result maybe a more difficult left-hand positioning.

Can someone please help me! I'm loosing sleep and shouting "OUT YOU DEMON" uncontrollably. I'm told a priest is on the way.

Thank you for any helpful responces. I hope this isn't a stupid question.

don't know about the video. But I tried to play that, and this worked quite well:

Left hand: 7=forefinger, 9=ring finger, 10=little finger.
Right hand: strike down for the first note, then up for the 2nd, and so on. Or use two fingers.
You don't need any special tuning or difficult left-hand positions.

Well, maybe Mike does it completely different, you never know...

What Carsten has posted here is perfect as far as the album version goes. In the concert he does play something slightly different - it's faster (I know that much wink). There are some pull-offs going on there (that's kind of like striking the string with it fretted somewhere, then letting go, but there are more things you can do than that - if you don't know what I mean i'll try and explain in more detail).

I'll have a look sometime and see if I can work out what exactly it is that Mike does there.

I tried just going up and down on one string at a time, and it works speed wise. I believe this is what Mike does. The bends that I saw I think are a protection on his part. I've noticed that he's always a very careful player, usually with a backup plan when he screws up (I've seen him make minor mistakes in concert videos). BUT near the end of the concert version of Outcast he does this kind of heavy rock bit. It sounds big but he doesn't do much with his left hand. His right wrist, though, always strikes downwards at full (very fast) speed. Tabbed after one whole progression...

It sounds like he's doing the old trick of pulling off to an open note...I still haven't sat down properly and tried to work out exactly what he's playing, but I think in some of the bits, it's a little like this (which, incidentally is pretty much what Man_in_the_Rain has)

Something somewhere along those lines, although that's probably not the exact notes he plays (I don't remember). You can actually do it without some of the pull offs (which I've marked with a p on the tab) and just pick all the notes, if you feel like it (which I found myself doing just now...).

Maybe I should investigate this more closely...

You think playing it on Guitar is hard, try it on piano! The part you are speaking about is really hard, but the last section is even harder. MY wrist is always rather sore after playing it, especially at a faster speed.

But it's a fun song! say scream those demons out!
