Hi all.

I've been wondering about this issue, since the trailers for the Exorcist have been on television here in the West and the TB opening theme is used smile:

Is it just coincidence, or is there a hidden meaning between:

Tubular Bells being remastered and rereleased (SACD)
The Exorcist being rereleased with a little bit of remastering and addition of scenes

(It's all a conspiracy)

But:

Which company produced The Exorcist?

Why, Warner Bros.

And which record company released two out of three Tubular Bells CDs? (not including OTB/MB etc)

Warner --- a division of Warner Bros.

And who bought Virgin Records in the early 90s?

EMI --- AND THEY recently almost merged with Warner.

You can make up your own minds about this, but I think that the proverbial dead horse is well and truly flogged.

Don't understand me wrong Tim, but: confused wink biggrin

P.S. BTW... I am one of those fans who watched this movie twice in cinema merely because of "Tubular Bells" (and whistling the tune biggrin while others were watching shockingly).

I don't think there really is a coincidence. I read somewhere that the re-release of the The Exorcist was done because of an upcoming 4th sequal to it some time in 2001 or 2002 (not sure). Still, i'm a fan of both The Ex and TB. smile

If you ask me, the whole conspiracy thing is out the window. Methinks it stinks of a tie-in.

I'm sure there's an SE box set of The Exorcist containing the film, the BBC documentary "Fear Of God: 25 years of...", an LE book and TB?

If I'm wrong, don't hesitate to complain.

OK, looks like I might have been misunderstood. Perhaps I should have posted this in General (Olivier -- if you want to move it to there, do so).

Anyway, the whole "conspiracy" was just something I thought was worth mentioning, not as a serious matter, but sort of a jokey look at how the world is full of coincidences.

To all those who misunderstood my point, I apologise as I didn't make myself clear. redface

BTW, there's a new part to this whole issue in that Mike might re-sign with Virgin. There's a story in that somewhere. wink

I can't believe that MO would have anything to do with Branson again.
It would be too much of a turn-around for him(and his fans)if he went back

Why does Mike hate Branson? Other than the fact he wanted to call Tubular Bells 'Breakfast in Bed'?

Well, for a start, Virgin Records isn't actually owned by Richard Branson any more - he sold it to EMI (shortly after Mike left if I remember rightly...).

Mike had problems with Branson because of the contract he had. When mike signed, neither him nor Richard Branson knew much about music contracts (supposedly...), so Mike ended up signing something that wasn't really too much in his best interests. The contract bound him to making 10 albums for Virgin (not including the likes of Exposed, Orchestral Tubular Bells, The Killing Fields, etc) which was later extended to 13 as part of a deal Mike struck with Virgin. This deal was to get better royalties out of them - Mike was getting a lot less than the newer Virgin signings at one time, which Mike thought was rather unfair (quite rightly really, although in Virgin's defence, he did sign the contract...). He negotiated more royalties in exchange for three more albums.
Another problems was that he felt Virgin weren't promoting his albums terribly well - a lot weren't even being released in the United States, for instance. He even tried co-operating wwith them more closely at one point, in a hope to get more of their support. The result of that was QE2, an album with covers of two songs suggested by Virgin executives, plus a co-producer they recommended. The problem was, Virrgin still didn't promote Mike's work in the way he wanted...
But Mike later made friends again with Branson - I think what Mike really hated was not Richard Branson himself, but rather some of the things that Branson had done to him. Around the time of the release of The Millennium Bell, Mike was talking of working with Branson again. That may well mean him signing to Branson's V2 label, rather than EMI's Virgin label...Either way, I think Mike will be careful this time to get a contract he's happy with (or at least, I hope he will...).

Oh, and I think the co-incidence thing goes further because...Isn't EMI part of Time Warner?

I thought that both Tubular Bells and The Exorcist were recently re-released to coincide with it being 25 years since they were made.
