I have sent the following e-mail to the AMAROK dry wall company to see where their company name came from:

I am writing to you in the interest of the Mike oldfield fans of the united kingdom and beyond. Your company name is called AMAROK. is this a coincedence or a purposley made mistake as a Mike oldfield Album of 1991 was named AMAROK. You were founded in 1996. We would just like to know as this is a big disscution at the tubular forum (www.tubular.net)
I look forward to your reply.
Thanks, Danny Hudson (Treslunas)

I have yet to recive a reply.

Hmmm, interesting. Is this a coincidence? If it was plagarism, would Mike be able to persue legal action?

Where did you hear of this company? Is it a respectable company, or one of those dodgey ones? Its probably a dodgey one, if you can't be bothered to invent your own name.

Well well well...  ;)  ;)
AFAIK Amarok, in addition to all its all possible meanings (check the FAQ for these) is another way of writing 'Amaroq', which means 'wolf' in Eskimo (Inuit). That's a common word, not copyrighted anywhere. :) The company's logo is a wolf, and they have a factory in Alaska (a friend told me this), where Inuit is spoken fluently by most people along with American English. And if 2 + 2 = 4, I'm afraid that Mike has nothing to do with Amarok (the company) or its name. They and Mike may just have taken inspiration from the same source, and a quote from the website seems to confirm this:

Quote
The name AMAROK means "wolf" in the Inuit (Eskimo) language. The word has been used in literature to signify the brave leader. Wolves are bold, independent creatures with a deep loyalty to the pack.

But...am I having a vague feeling of deja vu or this whole matter has already been discussed before in one of these forums?  ;)

It's like Mike being asked in interviews, "So, Mike, Tubular Bells...how did that come about then?", it will never die!

If you want to know about all the possible inspirations for the name, try searching the google discussion group for Amarok...

you'll probably get about 13123 billion results though :music:

It has indeed been discussed before - there's one topic here, but also another topic where it comes up again here - I found ChiRho's post at the bottom particularly amusing, in a prophetic kind of way...

There are quite a few respectable companies and services named after titles of books and albums, and various features from them. The Babelfish translation service springs to mind (a reference to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), and I can think of at least one hotel called 'Hotel California'. Unless the word is a trademark, nothing much can be done about it being used.

The company's website is www.amaroknet.com if anyone happens to be interested. As to how it was come across...no idea really. I remember coming across it in a search a couple years ago, but as the site must have been there for the finding for a while, I'm sure I wasn't the first to spot it.

It really isn't very unusual. There's a breeder station of alaskan malamutes in Czech republic called Bohemia Amarok. And another one is in Finland.

Kinda OT (but replying to Korgscrew): there's a cocktail bar where I live, called La Dolce Vita. I'm not gonna tell you what La Dolce Vita is, but go to www.imdb.com and you'll find it. :)
