mp4 is the commonly used filename ending for MPEG-4 files. It is a multimedia (i.e. audio-video-and-the-kitchen-sink) file format. See http://www.apple.com/mpeg4/ for more information.

The audio component in an MPEG-4 file is most likely compressed with AAC, which is a codec that achieves better compression than MP3. Then again, many codecs nowadays are better than MP3, including WMA and Ogg Vorbis.

Hope this helps,

Carsten.
