Light + Shade is awful...Two years I have waited for Mike Oldfield to release something (in fact more than two years, cause 2003 was the year of a re-release) and my patience has not been awarded. This album shows the Mike Oldfield starts, just like Jean Michel Jarre,to go on a totaly different way than the one they were before.I don't know if it is commercialism,I don't know if it's bad luck,I don't know if it just the incapability of not making anymore good-great-excellent music, but this is a total dissapointment.Old themes, from Tr3s Lunas and other albums, repeated hear under a new form,a combination between music and voice (something Oldfield has done once perfectly-judge by TB,Ommadawn,Incantations,Amarok) that has some heavy lacks and doesn't sound good to the ear. This is the kind of album that some would say nice, but not good.I,considering what Oldfield released and what Oldfield's music means (or ment),have to be more critic about this and say that it is not more than a 2 stars album.

Again,I'm very sorry to say this,I hope my opinion will be respected.

thank you

I loved L+S upon my first listen and still do, it's addictive!  :D

It really is great, I wouldn't moan about themes from Tres Lunas or Maestro being repeated, as these were games not albums.

I think Light is my favourite but as Mike suggested it can depend on mood.

I'd give the abum 8.7/10

I agree with amarokian. L+S is better than 3lunas, but ... it's poor. Poor music arrangement and the instrumentation is so on, as usual from 1994, including TSODE. I don't like new age, chill out, dolphins, whales, amateur music and guitar played like this. I like professional musician making professional music, working hard, in old-field style.

We can see somethin strange, new album and few fans in this forum. What's the matter?

Do you mean in this topic or in this forum? Seems to me L + S has generated a plethora of discussion, and by many new members as well as oldtimers. There are 80 topics in the L + S forum already; much more than many of the forums for works that have been around for much longer. Sure, thre are 15 billion topics in Tubular Bells 2003, but that, too, is a couple years out. :)  I will also take this opportunity to remind folks to make sure you're not starting new topics that already exist. With so many springing up so quickly, it can happen.

That's not entirely true - Tres Lunas is a game AND an album.  First Steps is built around a track from the Tres Lunas album (yes I know it's also built around Maestro, but it's only from other people's comments that I'd know that, as I haven't played Maestro).  Whether or not the track is repeated in Tres Lunas (the game) I wouldn't know, because I haven't played it.  Either way though, it's a huge shame that the longest track on the whole album is largely based on an earlier work.

track is repeated or not..
Mike have used tb theme and songs many times in many forms all the time. I think that is nice really. I dont mind that he do that because i love his music, and i like to see the songs have different faces also. It seems to be a not a popular album. The reason must  be that he trance the songs, just like what he did (a little) with millenium bell. That album many hates too...
Well one things is true about millenium bell, those two albums are very like in a way. But this is better!
